Just thinking. Some of you may have seen my other post that my guy has laminitis at the moment. He is due to be x rayed next week to see if there’s any rotation and to what degree. He’s always been shod in front, I took them off once about 8 years ago and the terrain was too stoney to successful give him the time and chance to adapt to being barefoot so he got shod in front again. He’s had his shoes off now to put pads and supports on while he has this bout of laminitis. Ideally I’d love for him to be barefoot in front. Is it possible after any rotation? Or do they need to be remedially shod? Obviously my vet and farrier will advise the best but generally interested.

A family member has a horse with rotation. She had a few months of remedial shoeing and then went back to being barefoot without any problems.

My NF was crippled by remedial shoes, they came off within 24 hours and we continued barefoot as my farrier had wanted to do anyway, no issues as he had very thick soles and grew loads of foot to work with when trimming every two weeks or so.

Have a read on here, especially "realigning trim" - with shoes the foot is what it is, barefoot it can be adjusted in tiny increments to realign the bony column, and if the soles need more stimulation to develop thickness, your boots and pads will do that. Recorded outcomes are better with good regular and knowledgeable trimming

Thanks guys, very interesting. It sounds as if being barefoot would be more beneficial in the long run if he could grow enough and strengthen up. It also means his frog would be ‘used’ as it should which is probably better all round. I’d really love for that to work. Hopefully he won’t have too much rotation. Perhaps this is the best time of year to give it a try.
