Hi,

Could anyone who owns them/have tried them tell me what they think of them please?

Long story but all my tack including saddle got burnt because of my landowner's bonfire :-(...so I am looking for a saddle under £450 really as I wasn't insured..

Pony is 14hh, Haflinger crossed anglo arab.

I only hack, often long hack or fast hack (mostly trot, with some canter and a bit of walk), how good are they?
Do they slip?
Do they feel secure?
Pony likes to spook, would they stay up?

Anything else you think I should know as I need one asap as I'm left with no saddle...

Thanks :-)

We have one for our Sec Ds who are all round and roughly Haffie shaped. Never had a problem at all. Daughter can and does mount form the ground with zero slippage, she rides at all paces and also jumps in it. She did invest in an HM seatsaver as she initially found the seat of the saddle slippery to sit on.. saddle plus seatsaver are the perfect combination.

All in all we highly recommend them.

In some ways, the pad you choose is more important than the saddle - and the pads can be quite expensive (£90-100). The Barefoot Grandeur Pad has a good reputation.

I used to ride my friends horse in this saddle and it was very comfortable. he was a big horse so I mounted from a block but i never remember it slipping or moving. i have a Haffy and would have one if I could afford it. id love to see a picture of your pony too! Xx

I have had a cheyenne for about 8 years now. First used on high withered TB. Now used on big shouldered cob.

Very comfy and secure. My cob has a spin in him and I feel quite safe. I bought the seat saver for it which makes it extremely comfy. The riding position is different, some people find rising trot a bit weird to begin with, but it made my position much better than the treed saddle I was using previously.

They come up on ebay reasonably regularly.

Hi,

I have a leather one I got off EBay for about £450 with grandeur pad, girth etc. It feels weird at first but then I grew to love it. Having said that I did end up buying a synthetic GP and now rarely use the Cheyenne. Originally my short-backed barrel-like coblet had issues with tree'd saddles being too long for his back and this is why I got the Cheyenne (now he's grown its not an issue...just!). You sit quite wide in them and I found the saddle itself to be quite heavy. I think you either like them or hate them! They're very handy if you have more than one horse it can fit. You definitely need a proper saddle pad to go with it though. I would find one you can try first if at all possible (you're not near Lincoln by any chance!) as you don't want to splash out and then decide you hate them! I never felt insecure in it and its really comfy for longer distances. You can still jump small fences but if you want to do much jumping you may want to get a tree'd saddle. You should also use safety stirrups as the leathers don't come off easily. I feel like I'm closer to my pony and have more 'feel' for him in my GP, but others will say the opposite. I think its really just a matter of taste...unless you want to do lots of jumping!:)

I have a feeling you are quite local to me Randonneuse? I know of a saddle fitter that had a secondhand Barefoot size 1 for sale a few weeks ago. She might still have it if you're interested.
