Hi, Just wanting some advice really. My 4 year old 17hh 600kg+ boy is barefoot, worked 4 times a week - schooled once (40 mins), lunged once and hacked both days at the weekend for around an hour. He is a good weight - not too fat and not too thin and relatively fit. Feet look good!

Currently fed twice a day

large handful (aprox a scoop) readigrass
1/4 scoop high fibre cubes
3/4 scoop speedi beet
1 measure equivite
plus recomended biotin, magnesium and brewers yeast.

and add lib hay overnight.

I just feel that sometimes we lack a bit of energy... I realise this could be down to fitness but I thought it would be worth reviewing diet too.

Any sugestions?

I would have thought that if he was getting enough calories then energy will just come from fitness. I have heard that some barefooters tolerate a small amount of straights such as oats, but that is not a route that I've followed (although in my youth we always fed straights)

I have tried oats a few times but with little success, red cell was great and I have recently started equicell equiform which is fab. It gave my horse a really good pick me up. It didnt make him silly or spooky but I noticed a difference with concentration and motivation whilst working. It did take about 6 weeks to kick in though (so did the red cell) but great results and no weight gain just overall condition.

This indicates a lack of essential minerals and maybe vitamins, if feeding straights we need to make sure they are getting a good mineral supplement.

^^i agree. I tried oats (no success), red cell (not bad) and the naf iron supplement (she didnt like the taste off).

What worked for me was adding copper and zinc to my barefoot diet. My forage analysis showed it was high in iron compared to the copper and zinc and the ratios didnt balance. Once I added copper and zinc (not alot) her energy levels have picked up loads, shes alert and so forward going :D

Did you get your forrage analysis through forrage plus? and how did you get hold of the copper and zinc - did forrage plus make you up the minerals?

This is something I have been considering getting done..
