Hi, I had a horse vetted today and I just wanted to ask a quick question. He has an old scar on coronet band to back of heel and wondering if it would be a problem to make him barefoot. Vet advised not too as it would split and crack? I am really interested in barefoot and was hoping my potential new horse could be barefoot but I now have no idea if this is possible?

If I'm honest I didn't totally look other than "oh yeah he has a scar there" and didn't think anything of it effecting him being barefoot. I ideally need a photo to show you but not possible as horse is many miles away! It isn't a big scar but does run through coronet band, bulb of heel and a bit of heel.

My boy (BF) horriby injured his hind coronet band and I was worried that it would affect hoof growth but although there is a scar in the coronet band it has never affected the actual hoof.

My old mare had had a coronet injury that caused a ridge to grow down in the wall. She was a paddock monster, but it never caused any problems.

I would get her on to a decent level of nutrition and fitness and try it, there should be no issue if the whole structure is sound, and if it is not then you can shoe. The vetting should indicate if there is a weakness. Tell the vet of your intention.

I've just realised you are considering buying this horse. Why take the risk - there are plenty of completely sound horses out there for sale. No foot, no horse :(
