Has anyone some good pics of their barefoot horse's feet?
My boy has been barefoot from the summer and still needs some work done on his heels, which were quite contracted.
Would love to see some pics to give me an idea of what I'm aiming for.
Thanks

6 months after the shoes came off. Now tell me that shoes weren't causing non-benevolent adaptive changes in that hoof!

I don't think the hooves really recover properly until the second growth hits the ground.

You will need to look at diet as well and in particular mineral supplementation - make sure there is enough Zn, Cu, Mg,Se etc...

(P.S> someone told me to be more subtle - so "non-benevolent adaptive changes" is my attempt at saying "harm" subtly :))

Here's an interesting set

Here they are 3 years later

And here he is getting his roll tidied up by his main rider (have kids, lose yer horse...:)). Ben 11. He wants to learn to do these things, so why say "No you're too young?"

And here he is doing what he likes best in life.

Trimmed by me. Rarely do anything with them other than roll the edges. It's a struggle against thrush over the winter due to the conditioned he lives in (i.e mud!) but he copes well.

We do everything with our little barefeet

WOW! The cropped version doesn't tell the story really, does it?

Can I ask - are horsewalkers ok for barefoot horses? I only ask because my unbacked young horse seems to be wearing his toes down and I don't want to have to shoe him.

I was absolutely mad when I saw what the designer and publisher had done. The whole POINT was what he is about to land on!!!

Your baby is probably just weak and dragging his toes. I don't really like horse walkers, I believe there is a fair amount of research suggesting that the endless tiny circles are quite bad for the joints, but I do understand that you may be stuck for any other form of exercise in the middle of winter. As long as he is not unsound, let him wear his toes, it won't hurt him. How worn are they? Most barefoot horses have a bevel at the toe and if they don't have one, we give them one :)

Re toe wear. Could well be that horse is just bringing breakover back to where he needs it to be. A decent trimmer will be able to advise you.

The Houston horses do 8 plus hours on tarmac, concrete, marble etc.

I used to do 50 fast miles a week on the road and didn't have any issues - properly managed the hoof will grow enough to compensate for wear, but the short toes which are natural for horses sometimes seem foreign to eyes only used to seeing the long shod toe.

Horse with navicular in both fronts, im only showing a pic of one front foot as i have sooo many photos
over 24 weeks ago, pulling the shoes off and destroying his feet.

He is now due another trim next week. still no huge amount of growth but he is getting sounder by the day!

You'll need to explain that to the vet I dealt with today:rolleyes:

Very competant horse vet specialising in lameness (and young-ish too, so not old school) was doing a lameness examination on the big horse today, inc lunging on the smooth tarmac.

After a couple of min watching on both reins she stopped me and said 'that'll do her now: I don't want her to get footsore on the tarmac as she has no shoes on'

She still looked sceptical after I pointed out she'd be doing 6hrs of road work on the common riders with no problems at all.

You can't win really: this is a top flight vet hospital with top class vets holding such beliefs on working horses barefoot :(
