Iv owned my mare 12 yrs and always had her shod, well just because that's what you do
my others are bare but mainly because iv had them since weaning and they just never needed shoes. Anyway after much research ( around a year of following rockley and spending every spare moment looking into barefoot) iv given it a go as I'm fed up of the slipping and after looking at barefoot horses all he time I just am not happy with her feet any more. It's been 7 weeks and the changes in the back of her feet are amazing, I let her have 2 weeks off to get use to bare toes then brought her back into work slowly using fields and wood chip tracks plus there's a stony track to our field that she walks along and in the last week and a bit iv started road work and she hasn't had one " ouch" yet and we have quite a bit of gravel round out lanes and she done the most amazing extended trot up the hill today
oh plus jogged all the way home so must be feeling ok.
The only question I have is the way she's wearing her feet. The back toes are being squared off but I'm not sure if its because she's being lazy, they are to long or because she has got a few problems in her hind legs which made shoeing hard as in the farriers words " nailing on kills her" but I'm not to worried about them tbh but her fronts are also being squared off and I'm a bit worried she will make herself sore as they are nearly squared of to the sole.( hoof wall worn nearly to sole in toe area) The foot is v flared and long so I know once the new hoof grows the angle change will bring the hoof back to a normal angle which I'm hoping will sort this? But do I just carry on hacking and hope the work grows the foot enough to keep her going? I'm building up the rd work very carefully.
