I have bought a 2nd hand BF saddle for my young gelding.

As he is growing and at the moment I just want to do groundwork with him wearing the saddle. Should I get the soft insert and then buy the appropriate resin insert (if the one the saddle came with is still too wide) once he's about to be backed?

I wouldn't have thought the resin insert would be felt that much without a rider on board, depends whether you have the bf physio saddle pad too?

I think my saddle fitter recommended ( it was either him or the saddle shop I bought it from) suggested stuffing that bit with a towel or similar if the resin insert didn't fit. I'm not familiar with the soft inserts but a towel would be a reasonable option I think, ESP again if you're only working in hand :)

I have been riding on my Barefoot with a soft filling for 2 years now on horses of several different builds (arabians, lusitano, icelandic horse etc.).
You can ofcourse get barefoot's own soft filling, but I made my own.
My experience with it is very good, I change the filling every half year so that it doesn't get worn and we're set to go again.
I've filled mine up with all natural wool, straight from my neighbour's sheep :biggrin3:
Make sure though that it is fully stuffed, before you tighten the girth and you should be fine.

Barefoot also sells a mold by the way, if you want to order different sizes.

The insert I have is wide and according to the printable barefoot chart, he needs a medium at the moment. I have popped the saddle on him just to see how far out it is, and it's not too far out. I have a grandeur pad with it but it doesn't have pockets for shims. I could make an insert myself as my Mum was given two free jacob's fleeces, so I might ask if she'll let me have a bit. :)

Are you sure that there aren't inserts? They are easy to miss, as the velcro lies very flat and takes quite a bit of undoing. I can't see why they would do a grandeur pad that didn't take foam pads, as thats the whole idea of them. My GP has the insert opening right at the front on the seam.
