Barefoot trimmer or equine podiatrist?

Yes, based on the training background. Trimmers tend to be uknhcp trained with the gist of the theory from Pete Ramey, podiatrists tend to come from the direction of K C La Pierre. The titles aren't protected though so equally could have trained for a couple of days! My preferrence lies with those who are UKNHCP trained.

There is a huge amount to be said for personal recommendation though so that would always take priority with me. I use our farrier to trim (about twice a year lol!) our two as he is excellent and supportive so I have felt no need to move from using him just because ours are no longer in shoes.

I just thought an EP was a type of barefoot trimmer... my farrier's also an EP, but I just say he's a trimmer... He's not really clued up on the diet side of things, but he does a nice trim :).

I'd go with personal recommendation regardless of who they are affiliated to, (which also applies to farriers in my view ;)), I've had good and indifferent to bad from both schools.

They are the same thing but different schools of thought.

EP's, DAEP's are the students of KC La Pierre's school or a fraction that broke away from him to form their own group.

Natural Hoof Care Practitioners are originally from Jaime Jackson's teachings and have either trained with his AANHCP, or the UKNHCP (an 'off shoot' from the AANHCP).

There are independents who have trained with any or all of them and decided to follow their own path for whatever reason (and there are many brilliant ones out there).

There is also the ESA, who take a bit from everyone but bow to no-one's ego;) but I am not aware of any practitioners in the UK yet.

It is continuously frustrating to me - but there is no organisation you can guarantee will provide you a great trimmer (a bit like farriers). Each trimmer has to be assessed on their own merit. Which can be very hard on desperate and confused owners:(

To me, the best ones have taken a little from everyone but don't religiously follow one person's teachings - as horses tend to disagree with every theory and 'rule'

I know that a lot of us feel that there needs to be an over-arching organisation to maintain quality, but I sometimes wonder what use that would actually be in practise. As you say, there is no organisation that can guarantee you get a good farrier. I would say that there is no organisation that guarantees you'll get a good riding instructor, saddler etc either. So maybe the best we can do is seek personal recommendations, check out their training and make sure that they are properly insured?

how many years do these people have to train in comparison to a farrier?????

I believe it's 2 years, but the question I want to know is how long farriers have to train on hoof anatomy? I've heard it's a matter of weeks, which would explain a lot :(.

As well as the initial training there's continual ongoing professional training, I've used a DAEP and a UKNCHP trimmer, and both have had regular training to further enhance their knowledge and skills.
