I had my horse 1 year today! With no health problems (touch wood)!! But when I had him shod he would practically ice-skate on Tarmac, so I had studs on the back and nails in the front because around me there arnt any bridlepaths so I can only use roads. Even with studs and nails they only worked for a week the roads are so smooth they just didnt grip. I moved yards and the owner mentioned barefoot.... Big no no to me at that point, but he lost a shoe so I had them all removed, he was sore for a week but he has been fine for 8 months now (touch wood)! But he has big seperations in his hooves from the wall and sole, cracks (which he had since I brought him) his hooves look a mess, but he isn't in pain farrier come once a month, says it's just cosmetic... Everyone at the yard is barefoot, their cobs on light work mines a shire x warmblood on faster work, jumping hacking and schooling, others at the yard suffer badly from abcesses. I don't know if I'm over reacting, I want to start competing next year and I'm ashamed to think what people will say when they see them. I'll load pics up, the farrier our yard uses charges £20 for a trim which is pretty standard round us but he only files the toes he doesnt remove dead soles, so I don't know if he doesn't do enough for my horse feet.... Whats everones thoughts? :S
