We are now three weeks barefoot, or four lost count! He is continuing to be sound and hacking out lovely in front boots albeit a lot slower and less enthusiastic than he was before, feet are showing a lot of change, hopefully positive, will post pics when I get someone to help :)
After a hack last night I notice a big chunk had come away leaving fibrous stuff underneath? And as you can see from photo another bit is coming away, I'm wondering if his toes were a little long and this is his way of self trimming? Opinions really appreciated thank you

It looks like normal chipping (the hoof being new to BF) to me. the "fibrous" things you see are the individual horn tubules, or possibly the old laminae.

If you can, try to remove the big chunks, especially if they are only hanging on by threads :)

Were the edges rasped off to prevent this?
To me this is worse than normal, I would rasp round the edges, probably ask farrier to tidy up and advise.

Well that's the thing bonkers, he removed shoes and tidied up where he could but left the remaining bit of toe, I asked him to come back after a couple of weeks to tidy up and reassess but he said no need and booked me in for normal six week visit ( normal farrier) think I need to give him a call :(

I think the farrier left them a bit long so they are wearing to the length he needs, albeit messily. Don't worry too much, they look strong feet and will soon sort themselves out. Just tidy up any tatty bits yourself.

People used to neat shod hooves can be a bit taken aback when a big chunk breaks off, but if the horse is sound, don't worry. It looks to me as if the toe was quite a bit too long, hence the big chunk.

Phew that's what I thought too, underneath looks fine and not compromised by missing chunks! And the farrier akways squared the toe up to the shoe. Next photo I will post is his front coronet bands that look flaky?

yes, agree with FfionWinnie. I have my own rasp and always tidy these up as soon as they happen. I have a look before I ride too, just in case anything needs tidying. To me, this just looks like long toe that has chipped off.
