Just this second watched Tim Wonnacott on TV on about some horseshoes that he found from years ago somewhere made of lead! He said the only conclusion he could draw were that they were made for pit pony's down the mine as the miners were very fond of their animal co-workers and you couldn't have steel horse shoes on horses down the mine as this could cause a spark which would have been disasterous!
I remember when a hyperbaric chamber exploded because the horse in it wore steel shoes and it kicked against the side of the chamber, going through the padded material to the metalwork underneath and set off a spark. Killed the horse and the lovely lady operating the chamber.
