My dog now 14mths old has discovered that barking gets attention he has really deafening bark and it really makes people jump its loud and high pitched .We have done basic dog training and he is very well behaved off lead but gets bored if he has to stay on lead, the barking attention seeking is starting to become a problem. We go to horse shows as I sj and he has decided its good idea to bark around sj ring if hes bored or wants to go home.I need few tips and commands .My previous dog was very laid back golden retriever and just happy to be around me the new one a aussie needs constant stimulation which is fine we keep busy all day but I need to teach him that he has to be quiet sometimes.I dont want to change him or break his spirit but need to assert few manners around show ring or he will have to stay at home which isnt good option.
He has been to horse shows from early age and is down yard every day and not bothered by horses .If I take toys to shows he is noisy with them so that isnt helpful either. The barking has just started at yard too its as if he is telling me he wants to go he gets persistent and bounces around me at same time.Im not prepared to leave him home for hours whilst I go to yard .
He barks at agility classes when excited too.
Hoping he will grow out of it but dont want to leave it either incase it becomes routine bad behaviour.
I was told to squirt with water pistol but Im not in favour of that idea
Thought wise people please:D

I would suggest that you need to teach the 'speak' command and the 'quit' or 'quiet' or 'enough' command.

I would look into starting clicker training with him, it will make your life a lot easier.

The idea is that you issue the 'quit' command, and the minute he is quiet, click and reward. The longer the time he is quiet, the better the reward.

Is there anything you can give him, like a Kong or very hardwearing chew toy/ball to keep him occupied - I sometimes tie my fella and give him a big foam ball to chew/suck on if I have to do something.

Will invest in kong for shows.Today everytime he barked I made him sit and said quiet no barking probably too many commands so will work on using one. Thanks forgot about clicker :D

Just be careful he isn't a smart little bugger and works backwards like mine - I get a treat for keeping quiet. I get told to keep quiet if I bark without being asked too. AHA! Bark bark bark - QUIT - treat please? :D

Now where is the like button :D

Our middle lab is a showing type square brick outhouse type build, and out of her mouth comes the highest pitched, yet loud and piercing bark that I have ever heard in a labrador. Wacking great big lab.. and it yaps like a terrierist!
OP I feel your pain, middle lab used to "yap" from 5.30 every morning and wouldn't quit :o

Love the boots lol
Yes this is deep but high pitched my retriever had lovely deep mellow bark this goes right through you.Fortunately only does it when excited or nervous but also think he is very bright and cavecanem might be right he will work out treats come for barking :D
