Finn has just started to bark when he hears a noise outside OH's flat
mad.gif
- he barks - gets shouted at then comes and sits infront of or next to me on sofa but continues with the half hearted barking/grumbling even when told to stop..

Is it because he's still getting used to surroundings?

Is it because he's scared?

or is it because he's being protective?

( I think it could be a bit of all the above!)

What can you suggest to stop this? or do we just have to get used to it!!

I would say, sorrounding and protective, but not scared, I think in a flat situation, it's probably worse, as he will hear everything, he may well settle once the noises become familiar, my rotti used to bark the place down at work and a home, when I first got her, she is a very protective/guard breed, but she has now settled and will ignore most sounds, she will only go mad at the door bell/being knocked at, or postman, everything else she ignores, I also shushed her, and told her to get to bed.

It's one thing having a dog to alert you, which is not a problem, but then there is the neighbours, scenario

Thanks though - I think it is prob a 'time' thing but neighbours as so bloomin noisy slamming doors and running up stairs etc!!

If it is fear or protectiveness I wouldn't allow him to sit next to you growling as this is him either guarding you or getting reassurance from you.
I would send him to his bed. If he has a crate, alot of dogs will be quiter in there as they feel safer in confined spaces. Or if he still continues it in his bed, you could try distracting him with toys.
Hope this helps
