Many years ago we used to feed boiled barley to the show horses. We had two or three that could not have it.... they came out in hard lumps over their body and often had filled legs. Others did very well on it - in those days there was nothing to beat it for putting on condition... am going back some years now

How big are these hard lumps?

Star had a run of them down her neck and a couple under the saddle. Since changing her feed 8 weeks ago (and taking the barley out incidentally), they are mostly gone...just 2 left. Her lumps were about the size of a pea.

If your horse has the sh*ts while on Barley, or changes behaviour- becoming grumpy, lethargic , or the other extreme, very wild, you know he has an intolerance.

Allen and Page do a sugar and cereal intolerance mix. My TB has been Ok with Barley but if he gets a sniff of oats he becomes the Duracell bunny - including cantering on the spot - when you ride him. I can't feed him anything more that a quiet mix.

My ID gets loose droppings & becomes extremely difficult to handle/ride if fed anything with barley in it. He seems to have become worse as he's got older, as a youngster he cou;d tolerate small quantities of cool mix (though he was rather hyper) but nowadays a handful of mix containing barley fed for a couple of days makes him act like something insane!

Hmmm.... my boy is lethargic and often grumpy, but then he always has been! But to try to give him oomph I have always fed a competition mix (ie. with barley in it) which has never really done much, I mean it hasnt really perked him up all that much. He itches like hell, ripping half his mane out every year - but I believe thats sweet itch. But he also has the odd lump on him, but Ive always thought they were bug bites.... Does it sound like he could have an intolerence?!

I took my mare off cereals about 2 years ago, she was really itchy and seemed to be hot all the time, She is on Dodson and horrel ERS pellets which are designed for horses that tie up, they are high oil. She has been great since being on those and whether co-incidence or what, she has also become more chilled with things such as clipping (used to be sedated) and now doesn't need to, out riding doesn't get so het up, and doesn't itch her legs, which she used to rip to shreds.

I'm not sure if it was the barley - don't really want to go back and test!!

My old boys legs used to fill and also he got Urticaria, He was incredibly sensitive though. He was even allergic to some rug bindings!

We had one with barley problems - he got small hard lumps, mainly down his neck, but also across his back. They weren't really like any bug bites I have seen. I've always found barley a really good feed to feed those horses that need the energy but who really could do without any fizz! Super barley was my standby for those who lost weight going into winter. If your horse is lacking oomph, maybe oats would be a better bet for him?
