I really hope this subject has not been "done to death" and I hope I have titled it sufficiently not to upset PF. After all the recent posts on Soapbox I am now quite paranoid about posting!!

Anyway I must buy a barrier cream this afternoon for hunting tomorrow. My poor mare has very sensitive skin and often comes out in a rash, particularly after a days hunting in thick boggy mud. Sometimes its a small prickly rash and sometimes big hot lumps that are obviously annoying her (judging by the faces she pulls!) but always on the areas covered in mud ie under tummy.

Will Vaseline be enough, or perhaps udder cream? All advice very welcome.

May sound silly but have you tried applying baby oil for a few days to effected areas prior to the day hunting - it will help to stop the mud sticking to the skin/coat as it will have left a nice chiney residue... also mane/tail spray applied in said areas prior is also an idea

Baby oil is ace. Nice and cheap and makes brushing mud off easy peasy - in fact it tends just to fall of itself

I agree and use it quite often myself. Just wonder if something a little more rubust may be needed in this particular case???

Thank you, the farm supplies shop did not have any udder cream or salve (unless I wanted enough to keep 500 dairy cows in stock for 6 months!!) So I will go down now and put on baby oil, again tonight and tomorrow morning and then smear vaseline just before I tack up.

The gales are so strong here and everything is a bog I hope it's better tomorrow.

Just a last minute thought - but do you think too much baby oil will make her skin too soft and infact more susceptible to the ingraining of the mud?

Well, I applied the baby oil twice but forgot to vaseline before I left for the meet (can you believe I could be so stupid!!) Anyway we crossed a chest high river about four times during the day and had a long hack home, so we was completely dry when we got back and I was able to brush everything off. No rash this morning!

Thanks for all your replies and I will definately continue with baby oil and vaseline (or napply rash cream/liquid paraffin)

Oh we had a wonderful day, sunny and no rain. Quite hard and fast and our first stop wasn't until 1.30pm. Continued on until 2.30 when they called it a day. I love hunting and love my lovely mare!
