Base for outside mobile fieldshelter?

I'm having 2 mobile stables delivered, they're going on a grass base with rubber matting on the top. Does anyone have any recommendations for what base is best to use outside? The horses will only be led out of the stables on it so won't spend a long time standing on it/churning it up!

If its not going to get too muddy, then I'd be tempted to use rubber mats outside too - making sure they're bobble up to stop slipping. We use off cuts for walkways across fields etc. Another alternative is grass mats, but the bits will go through them, and you won't be able to sweep them as easily.
