I just had to dash off to the KC website to find out how big basenjis are, I think one would fit in just right with my too-small greyhounds

I particularly like the one with the hedgehog, Islay only interacts with hedgehogs in a negative way

Basenji's are only little, they can fit in any family

She is very good with my other animals. She learned fairly quickly about the hedgehogs after nudging it with her nose... OUCH!! She didnt do it twice lol Not sure i'd trust a JRT with them, they'd find a way to uncurl them i think! Maya's not that bright!

Great pics your dogs are lovely, and that hedgehog is just so adorable!!

Their beds awesome, so who gets first dibs on top bunk!?

I love their bed

Delilah is usually top bunk as Maya seems to like hiding in the "cave" in the bottom bunk, but sometimes to annoy Lilah she jumps on the top and sits on her

Thanks all!

Basenjis are an amazing breed. They are completely unique and not a typical dog so certainly not for everyone. They are used as hunting dogs by tribes in Africa, they are a sighthound so you have to be aware that they may never be 100% off the lead. Some people decide that, to be safe, they will only walk their dogs on a long line or flexi lead. I personally think that a fit, healthy dog needs to have some freedom to run, especially a high energy dog like a basenji. Maya gets two walks a day, both about an hour and both incorporating about half and hour off lead running. I am very lucky to have a fully enclosed dog park directly behind my house which is ideal, but i have also found that when walking her in a "pack" with my other dogs she does not stray too far from them. I have worked really hard from day 1 on her recall and it has been 100% since she was a tiny pup. I would not walk her off lead anywhere near a road, but i do walk her through farmland and on the hills and stuff. Basenjis generally have a reputation of being very bad with chewing and being destructive. Maya has only chewed things i've accidentally left near her (hairdryer, straighteners, camera) but never done any damage to the house or her wooden beds or anything. I do put a lot of that down to the fact that she is physically and mentally tired at the end of the day as she has a good amount of exercise as a lot of people dont walk their basenjis anywhere near enough IMO.

The major good points of the breed are that they dont bark, they dont have any smell, and they only moult a very small amount. But, they arent silent - they have an adorable yodel and can also make a very unpleasant screaming noise (Maya has only done this a handful of times but i know it can be a problem with some) so that is something to bear in mind, generally they are quiet dogs though. The non-smelling thing is great, i didnt believe it at first, how can a dog not smell like a dog?? But its true, they have no smell at all!! Some people say they are hypoallergenic. I dont know about that, but my friend who has severe allergies and comes out in a rash around my other dog can have Maya on her lap and be fine so there must be some truth in it!

Temperments can be a problem with some lines. I have seen dogs at shows attacking their owners when they are being groomed!!! And several times i have seen judges being bitten which is unacceptable. Maya has a wonderful temperment with people, she is very loving! She also gets on great with most other dogs, she plays with lots most days at the dog park. She can have a growl at dogs if she is on lead, or on my lap and they jump on her or are overly pushy, but she has never gone for any, its just a warning.

But yeah, they are amazing and have the most fascinating history dating back to the ancient egyptians (they are depicted on the engravings on the pyramids!!) and make fantastic pets with the right owner

My mum used to breed Basenjis back in the 1970s. She went to Crufts with them and stuff. They were always very good with small kids - and we were probably very annoying!

The breed though does seem to have changed shape a bit since we last owned one - more elongated now.

Do you think? They are generally considered one of the very few breeds who have hardly changed at all over the last few centuries

They should be square, but look high on the leg.
