For a while now i've been considering getting a dog as now i have left home i realli miss having one around! When i was younger i attended a camp at a morgan horse stud in wales and they had a Basenji there and to cut a long story short i fell in love with the breed.
I was wondering if anyone has/knows someone who has one or breeds them just so that i could find out a little more. I've done a fair bit of research on the net and im still in love, even after all the stories of them chewing everything in site and running off into the horizon!

love this breed my grandparents used to rescue them, and there are loads that need a good home if you want to rescue, they are very good at chewing stuff espec when you go out just to punish you lol, also very good at running off after deer, many a time we ran round field after field trying to catch them, they are extremelly loyal and very clean dogs, great with kids as they are known as nanny dogs in the congo. but i would not advise getting one unless you have loads of space for then to run in each day as they really are not a town dog or a small home dog, they can be very demanding and love their country walks.

When i get another breed i will definately be getting a basenji. I absolutely love the breed and they are becoming more popular over here!

You have to have a very secure garden as they can climb anything under 6ft and you will be lucky to see them again!! Some people say you cannot walk them off a lead, other people say you can. They are a hound though and if they see something to chase they will just run and run, so training is very important.

They are also very noisy, which people dont realise, they think cos they cant bark that they must be quiet!! Having seen lots of excited basenjis all at one place in a show, i can tell you for certain that they can make an awful lot of noise!! But again, you just need to train them not to, and keep them active.

I would go to a show and see what types you like and have a chat to breeders. They're very friendly on the whole and were more than happy to chat to me when i've gone to see them.

we always used to let them off the lead when we had established a bond with them, but you do have to be on your guard as they will just go even if well trained, they do make a silly yoodle noise which is very funny to hear, the breed has changed so much over the years they are now really fine but they are still the same huge personality
here are some pics of the ones we had

Thanks for all your replys. Guess I better find out where the nearest dog show is then! I am considering rescuing one, although out of interest how much would a puppy from a respected breeder sell for?

Foxviewstud your photos are gorgeous, especially like the last one!

I just found this thread when i was looking back at what i'd posted on here...

I had to update this as, in February this year i finally got my long awaited basenji puppy! A little tricolour bitch. She is STUNNING and an absolute joy to live with, i adore her.

She is 7 months old now and has been to a few shows where she's done really well!
