can anyone help- i am trying to find a new saddle for my fat 16.2hh mare - have had saddler out twice am trialling new one but have had to put riser pad underneath the back as felt like i was sitting on her tail! anyway i have been recommended the bates air filled saddle- apparently horsatack do a saddle fitting for you in store then come out and fit it to your horse, has anyone tried this?

pullingmy hair out over saddles as supposed to be starting to compete now but cant find anything that sits on her well, shes tbxclydesdalexhackney so a big shoulder and a medium wide to wide.

any help appreciated!

:O
my advise...
DON'T TOUCH A BATES SADDLE!!!
Had a Bates Saddle fitted for my ex-racehorse, she started going downhill and has recently started getting lumps along her spine, have had alot of poeple look at her and they have all said that it was the Bates saddle that has caused it, apparently it causes pressure along the shoulders and the panels squeeze too firmly along the spine and cause fluid to build up. I'm not sure if this is true, but i have recently had a new saddle fitter out and the horse has changed loads with the new saddle. Hope this hasn't made your decision hard but this is just advice and experiences!!!

I've got a Bates and love it (so does my horse!) but IME they suit TBs and that sort of type so possibly not the best for your horse.

Your mare sounds a bit like a friend of mines, she ended up getting an Albion VSD which gave her room to use her shoulders. Before that think she had an Ideal but always had to use a riser pad and it never fitted very well.

Go for a VSD or WH saddle, and not an air filled on on a round shaped horse. I tried an CAIR filled Wintec dressage once on a cob and it was like bouncing on a Space Hopper and he hated it too.
