Have found a lovely Bateson Ascot for sale as an upgrade for my 505, but having looked at sizing compared to the 510 I am wondering if the Bateson Ascot is noticeably bigger than an Ifor Williams 505 at all (according to the spec on the websites it is a bit bigger, but not as much as the 510). Has anyone got an opinion on this? It is for a 17hh TB who is just a bit too tall for the 505, he has a very long neck so his ears touched the top! (Didn't travel him in it, just wanted to see what I was looking for size wise).

Do you think the Bateson Ascot would be big enough, or am I better off with the 510?

I'd go for the Bateson, or look to see if you can find a Bateson Deauville as they're bigger. There are a few on the market at the moment, it depends if you want ramp or doors though.

According to the specification on the website, the Ascot and Deuxville are the same? It seems the only difference is the addition of a tack locker.

I have the Deauville its basically the same as the 505 sizewise its 5cm (2 inches) taller inside width/ length of stall basically the same. If you want more internal space then a 510/511. But the bateson will do the job and are much nicer to tow a better ride for the horse I think. So depends whats important to you, I have travelled a 17h and 16.3h big ID hunters in mine and had no problem. Also bateson tend to hold there value more and tend to be snapped up when on sale so the re- sale value would be better too!

I would definitely go for a Bateson Ascot. I travel my 16.3hh TB in mine, who hates travelling and goes around like a giraffe, and he has plenty of head room. I think they are much more inviting, being white inside. The suspension also gives a much nicer ride and there are none of those horrid rattles you get with an Ifor.

Ascot a fair bit taller and longer than a 505....I park mine right next door to a 505 and it is noticeably larger all round. My chunky 16.2/3hh Hanoverian travels fine in mine and it has fitted my friend's 17.1hh very chunky dutch wb in before. Y other mare whilst smaller at 16hh is a good 6'9 rug length and wide and she fits too. Lovely trailers and way less rattly than IW. No way would either of my girls fit in a 505. The 16hh'er has travelled in one once and it was tight. Had to back her out as its way too tight to get her out the front and she is a seasoned sensible traveller.

How did the 17.1hh look size wise in it if you don't mind me asking? And was that with partitions in?

My boy is 17.3 with a v long body and neck and travels in our Ascot perfectly. We use a breach bar front and rear with no partition mainly because we only ever take one but travels fine with the partition in too x

I would say ascot all the way anyway. It does yravel bignhorses well but also it unloads on the left. Which has lead to being able to get a large horse out after the car broke down without him getting run over
