Hi,
I am about to sell my 3.5t Renault Master 51 Reg (I'm in Devon if anyone is interested!!) to change it for a tow car and trailer. 1. I want to have weight capacity for 2 big horses and 2. I can't afford to run a car and horsebox (tax, insurance etc etc).

I am thinking Mitsubishi Shogun SWB. I think I can afford £10000 so should get a 55 reg, c.60000 miles.

I was then thinking Ifor 510 but looking around online the Bateson Ascot has caught my eye. I have £2000-3000 depending on what I sell the lorry for and buy the tow car for. I am determined to get a metal floor or similar rot proof so avoiding wood!

Please can I have comments good AND bad on the above. How sturdy is the Bateson?!
I have experience of the Ifor (my parents have the 510) and my main negatives were on finish - putting tie backs in silly places etc.

I have a trailer towing assessment tomorrow too and can do the test as soon as the end of the month!!

Would go for an Ascot over IW every time! (and get the boston doors if you can). They are well built, sturdy, silent and designed to be very user friendly (tack locker, light, easily removable rubber mats).

Do you think £2800 is a fair price for a 2003 Bateson Ascot in good condition? I have seen one online and thinking of asking Dad to go and look with cash in his back pocket if he likes it!!!
Ascot caught my eye because of the extras like the tack locker!!!

I got mine which is about the same age for £2250..... it was a Buy It Now on ebay.

It was in Oct (cheaper time of the year) and from deepest darkest Wales.

But it does have the Boston Doors which adds value.

Not far off in price if you can knock them down a little and it's in good condition. They are not common and hold their value well.

Ifor Williams are indestructable. I have a 510 for short journeys and not the best of traveller who kicks hell out of it and not so much as a scratch inside. A friends (who has the Ascot) horse kicked a panel out on hers and put a big hole in the mudguard.

If I go hunting then we carry 2x16.2hh with tack on and still loads of space. Also if you have one horse then you can shut over the door behind it and leave the other open. Can't do that in a Ascot!

Bright, airy and easy to clean, fab floor and brilliant to tow as well. IW all the way.

Thanks. The Ascot I have seen is on eBay at the moment. The listing is about to end with no bids so I've emailed the owner and I might try to cut a deal!!!

Has anyone else had a Bateson suffer with damage? My lad doesn't normally kick but I find all horses give them the occasional smack so I'd hate it to result in a hole!!!

I am definitely keeping my options open. What year did Ifor's stop using wooden floors btw?!

My Ascot has metal and rubber reinforced panels all around the bottom (as in half way up the walls) and I would actually call it indestructable!! I had a 16.3hh youngster go down in it (panicked, 1st time he had ever travelled) and do a 180 in it with the partition on top of him. The only damage out of what looked like a wreckage was a clip needed replacing. You can imagine the carnage that went on inseide, my friend thought the whole trailer was gonna go over!!!!!

Have to say Bateson as a company are fantastic to deal with for spare parts. You can buy them direct and they put them straight in the post!

One thing for sure is I'll be going to my local Bateson dealer and having a good look in the flesh so even if I don't get this first one I can watch out for them online!
