Im currently trying to get my Bateson horse trailer back on the road but the brakes are needing to be replaced. I can fit the new drum brakes easy enough but im not sure about how the auto brake part of the trailer works, where abouts is it on the trailer? will it need servicing? is it electric?

I also need to replace the auto brake wire but i pressume this is fairly easy. Any info would be great as im going to get to work on it asap.

I think that if you don't know these things maybe you should take it to a professional?

Bateson are very nice and helpful though... Maybe give them a call?

Its always easier to take it to be fixed but im confident enough to fit all the brakes myself. I just wanted to know how the brake load compensator worked and if it needed servicing over time?

Once the work is complete i'll still have it checked over by my local trailer company for peace of mind :)

No electrics involved just plain ol cables
to shoes inside drums you just need to make sure everything is free , adjusted and greased as req the auto bit is just a simple steel cable attached to the handbrake lever so if the trailer comes unhitched it pulls the handbrake on ....

Basicly the hitch has a spring and a gas filled ram inside the only maintainance it need is greasing if it is worn or the brakes shunt is safest just to replace it with a new one .. but most problems are caused by seized cables and or linkage or out of adjustment.....

Sounds fairly straight forward then. I removed 2 of the brakes from the rear axle a year ago as they had seized and took the trailer out for a spin and all seemed ok.

Im going to replace all 4 brakes and got quoted £98 for the parts, does this seem reasonable?

Also will the wire for the braking system have to be purchased from Bateson or can i use a universal one?

I think the brake away cable is fairly standard so any trailer place should have something to suit, they may also have other parts for you to compare prices too.. but if its around £100 to sort your brakes out that sounds ok..
