So I had first lesson on Ty since last year (we've been concentrating on getting our confidence back in each other since crimbo)

Our YO has been schooling him once a week as he has issues with accepting contact etc.

Well, I learnt that not only did I not have a clue what maintaining a contact is but I also did't realise what a clever little sh*t he is!

Spent 20 minutes of him jogging around the school, throwing his head around, bucking and kicking out all in the name of 'I want my head biiatttccchhhh' Didn't realise that him throwing his head around makes him worse as he was rattling the bit and thinking I was doing it!

Sat it out and at the end he was going well. Just need to keep consistent.

Really did freak me out how little I knew about riding in a PROPER outline and pushing him onto the bit ect - what an eye opener!

Onwards and upwards hopefully - I will have arms like arnie in a few weeks!

You need to KICK!

Sounds strange but will make your arms hurt less!

All horses are different - he's not a warmblood remember

My YO is a sh*t hot rider and just said you have to sit it out and push forward - you don't kick, kick, kick with Ty it jsut doesn't work......he got bored in the end though!

Makes me realise how many people (inc. myself) don't ride properly though - just a few things and everything seemed to click into place. Could really feel him rounding up under me and pushing forward onto the bit.....

Well done for getting a little bit of a tune at the end - its hard work but will be worth it.

I know what you mean about how little you know. I've had amy current boy for 3 years and competed him with some success to date but really started to knuckle down about 3 months ago. New trainer really opened my eyes to how badly I was riding and we are starting to get some amazing results both on the flat and over jumps. I am still not a perfect rider but the difference in me and therefore the difference in the horse is amazing.

Ditto lol seems completely bonkers when the horse is trying to pull you forwards!

Leg to the hand - not hand to the leg

Glad that you made some progress

Definately - it makes sense but you can't kick, kick, kick a TB! I'd rather back up with the schooling whip than deaden his sides (though I'm sure that's what FF meant

)

The implusion in him now is amazing though - you wouldn't have thought he was a TB before!

Had a moment of mummy proudness when a girl from next doors racing yard said to my friend 'what a stunning looking horse - I like him alot'.... haa haa

Sounds like you got alot out of the lesson hun - she's really good isn't she?

She told me similar with Fin, apart from Fin's evasion is to just pull pull pull and lean - and i too think I will have some mega muscles in no time at all!!!

I can see results with mine and Fin's partnership when we're riding and it all seems to make sense.

It's quite worrying how some instructors I've had in the past have suggested pulling head in for "pretty look" with no power from behind. THere's just a bit of a pain barrier to pass before it all falls into place.

Can't wait to see you riding!!

You obviously haven't seen Ty do that!!! I had to lock my elbows into my side as he pulls straight down! Worked out now that if he does a tiny pull, followed by a long one he gets the reins!

Managed to hold the contact for 10 of those 20 mins - had my hands really far apart and kept them stock still.....I honestly thought he was going to go up a few times but I just pushed on!

Maybe there's hope for the boys yet then! xx

Ok ok I meant more leg not kicking like a pony clubber!

And PR I have ridden more than warmbloods you know - in fact I had an ex racehorse straight out of a race yard who I schooled and sold on as an eventer (was riding him up to PN and he did a vg dressage!) shock horror! - your use of leg and seat is important on every horse you ride - I ride with leg up into my hand - maybe I am wrong to do this but it has always worked for me.

Its like one of those 'halelujah' moments when it all falls into place.

Same as Safina here, have competed with some success in the past, but now with new trainer my eyes have been truely opened and for the first time Im riding with my legs rather than kick to go, pull to stop

Even discovered yesterday that shoulder in should be done with the leg only

and guess what - it works!

Ty must be reading the same books as D 'How to evade everything' and 'How to throw a proper strop when you don't get your own way'
Keep up the good work!

Always got the seat thing as you have to use it to stop ty occasionally - just nice to understand what I'm doing with him as he's bloody hard to ride!
