Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me with this. My son is after a bavarian mountain hound or something similar.
Dont know much about them though. We live on a farm so have plenty of room & my son likes to shoot. He is after something that he can go hunting with & rather liked the look of them.
Any advice would be great.

Hello,

I can't profess to be an expert on them, but have met several showing my hounds in europe & a few in the UK. Last year I was giving a lecture on my breed (Hamiltonstovare) and the other lecture that day was on the BVMH. I think they are lovely to look at, an interesting breed, possibly not the most sociable with other dogs etc. They are very much a working breed & as with any breed recently introduced to this country, there is a wide variation in type etc. I believe they are/were going to do some tracking trials with them? It will depend on what job your son wants his dog to do, pick up or flush for example, as to whether they would be suitable.

If you want details of the breeders etc that I have just message me.

I get the impression they are not the breed for everyone and have some traits that are quite specific and not open to debate! :D I was given the impression that they are not possibly suited a regular, 'pet' if you want, home.

I hope that helps!

Good luck in your son's search for a hound!

Thanks for that I will PM you in a mo. Basically, he wants something that willeither go out with him & a gun or catch things like rabbits. I know the BVMH is good for deer, which we do get but I dont know about rabbits.
To be honest I think he just liked the look of them.
If anyone has any other ideas then I think he would be open to them.
All I know is that it has to be short haired ( got a merle that is forever molting), not afraid of a gun & rather be outside in the fields? hedges than in doors. And I say slightly less energetic than he is!!! :D
