Hi there,

I started BD just over a year ago (Sept 23) as I bought a lovely horse who had done a bit of BD with a previous owner at novice.

I took up dressage after sustaining a serious head injury show jumping having jumped for many years- I decided to give something safer a go in my mid forties.

We started doing quest with a team and enjoyed great success including winning the semi final and two top 10 scores at the quest nationals in November a couple of months ago.

I took my time to learn how to ride in my dressage saddle and stayed in prelim for most of last year, and realised we were doing very well for an ex show jumper who has no idea what they are doing with a 15 year old horse. We qualified and attended the summer area festivalin prelim and got a top 10 place.

We qualified at the end of last year for winter regionals in prelim silver, area festival for prelim silver and novice bronze - these are in February.

My question is I take it I can do area festival in Novice, and regional in prelim? Or can I compete both novice and prelim silver at area festival? I have got to do my entries this week so just wanted to check.

Points wise- as we did quest quite a bit in the last year and I only started dressage just over a year ago I only have 20 points at novice, and 65 points at prelim so a total of 85. My horse has 125 points

Also- as I haven’t done a regional before what is the actual difference between the two?

Thank you

You can do areas at 2 consecutive levels, assuming you are eligible as a combination.
Or you can do Regionals at the lower level and Areas the higher level.
BD have very easy flow charts and tables in the rulebook to check if you are eligible.

Regionals tend to be a better standard, so more competitive.

Thanks for replying. I assume we are eligible I put out points on the post and we have qualy codes for the above.

I got a bit confused with the BD terminology of “cannot compete a regional and area festival at the same level in the same season”.

Going on your reply- can I then compete the areas at both prelim and novice, and also the regional on prelim which is two weeks later next month?

Thanks for your help I am new to BD

Oh looking at it you are saying I can do one or the other? I need to send my entries this weekend and BD are out of office

You can do regionals at prelim silver and areas at novice bronze

OR

You can do areas at prelim silver and novice bronze

YOU CANNOT DO prelim silver at both areas and regionals within a few weeks….ie using your winter qualifications.

Check the rulebook for eligibility - it's really easy to do.
Don't rely on having qualifying emails, it's your responsibility to make sure you are eligible for what you enter.

quizzie is correct, you can do all Areas, OR Prelim Regionals and Novice Areas.
You cannot compete at Novice at both Areas and Regionals.

You can do regionals at prelim silver and areas at novice bronze

Thanks Quizzie I will enter the regionals prelim silver and novice area festival 😃

I don’t expect I have been pushed out of qualification as only have 65 prelim and 20 novice points and he only has 125 points novice and below. We didn’t get in the first 3 at our area festivals and don’t think the quest nationals count

The qualification rules are mostly based on experience / results rather than points. The checklists in the BD rule book (freely available on the website) are very easy to follow - go and check them before spending money on entries!

Also if you have any questions, give BD a call. They are brilliant at giving you a quick, easy to understand answer as sometimes the rule book can be baffling especially when your horse has points at higher levels than that at which you are competing (which I don't think yours does).

Thanks Nicnac the office closed this weekend and I have to do my entries today hence the question.

I can’t see anything in the rule book eligibility for the festivals or regionals - I am in prelim silver anyway because I got over 68% at our last area festival in prelim bronze so I moved up. Looking at it I can’t do prelim at area festivals again anyway as we got over 68%

As both he and I have only done a handful of novice classes the tables look ok. The only thing of concern is the national championships but we did the quest national championships not normal BD so I don’t think it counts.

So I will enter the AF in novice and regional prelim silver today

The eligibility tables start on page 83 of the handbook and are pretty straightforward if you work through the yes/no questions.

Did you go to the Area Festival Championships last season? If you went to champs and scored 68+ then you'll be out of Prelim Bronze. If it was just a normal AF then you're fine so far as I can see.

Thanks Matafleur. Entries done as I wanted to do both area festival and regional which is two weeks before the AF. So have just entered the Area in novice and regional prelim silver. I wasn’t going to do any more prelim classes but I thought I may as well have a go as it is suggested the regionals are harder than areas so may as well.
