Need some ideas please. I have been schooling & competing a friend's well bred but quite green horse, she is doing really well and has won a couple of Novices and getting marks around mid 60s.

Her way of going has really changed and she has developed a lot of power, which is great at home but at competitions she is a bit lit up and I struggle to get her to listen to my seat aids, so I have to use the rein and she starts arguing with me. The last few shows we have been to she has really not been on side and we have been getting "tactfully ridden, but horse tense" comments and marks in the mid-high 50s (eek!)

I wonder if I'm not strong enough in my core to contain the power we've created and she needs a physically stronger rider (not strong arms & legs, but strong core). She is also scaring me a bit at shows and together with the pressure of riding for someone else, I am finding it all a bit stressful. The thing is she has been tried by a pro before and she just bucked and bucked with her, she is a sensitive type who can throw everything out of the pram if forced so it's a case of making her think it's her idea. I do have someone in mind who I might ask to take her to the next couple of shows and just see what happens, he is much stronger in the core than me and quite a bit braver!

Other than that I don't know how to improve my seat/competing enough that I can feel confident on her at shows. Any suggestions?

Ok, don't panic first of all. This is quite normal for young horses. Often when they first go out they're a bit star struck. Then the start to get a bit brave and think, oh ho, I know this game and they get a bit uppity!

Take the pressure off and do some unaff, get some lessons with her to help you feel more confident in your control of her, and lastly, compete her until she's bored of it!

Good luck, you're doing fine, it's not a question of overpowering her, it's a question of her being bored and you learning control, that's not going to happen overnight so have confidence in yourself and carry on!
