I was of the opinion that should you wish to hold affiliated events, there should be means of refreshments available?

Yesterday I went to a local venue, that has only just started doing affiliated events, and after dismounting and sorting the horse, I would have really appreciated a cold drink... bearing in mind the temperatures were touching 30 degree's!!! to find the canteen/cafe facilities had been closed!

There were still riders competing at Medium level after I had finished and I really felt for them as there was no where to get a drink apart from a water fountain which served out "warm" water!

Upon collecting my sheets I asked why the canteen was closed to be told that no one was going in there and the staff get bored so closed!!!

Not really good enough in my opinion!!!

So could those in the know please clarify this for me!

That would'nt be a certain 'college would it?
Funnily enough this 'dresage center of exellence' was less than that today also!!!
I do believe that there is a minimum standard for Premier leagues but other than that the organisers put whether refreshment are available in the schedule. If that was the case and i think it is if it is where i am on about then i think it would be right to bring this up with the venue and also BD.
Can you make head or tail of that!!!!!
You are right it is not good enough.

I went to an affiliated show to help a friend a few years ago, they were arriving the night before their class and had rung in advance and were told that the canteen would be open until well after their arrival time, but when we got there (over an hour before we had said) it was well and truely closed.

Not sure if its the same show centre or even what area you are in, but it sounds the same sort of thing.

I ran some affiliated shows, but we had no 'proper' canteen, we still did food and drinks, it does not take too much work to supply basic tea coffee and water at a show, or put in the schedule that refreshments may not be available, so that people could take their own.

eeerrrrr correct! Were you there today? (Rats, we should communicate more, I did the two elementary classes!)

I thought there was something in the rule book about refreshments as there is about the amount of space needed to warm up if running two arenas etc.....

I remember when this place got announced its new found excellence standard and I had a moan on here about its bad reputation, canteen never being open, no gates etc etc and someone who was a student there at the time, answered back saying that the canteen was always open and had been for the past 8 months.... my reply was.... thats odd I competed there 6 months ago and it wasn't open then!

I have emailed BD and asked if they could iron out the teething problems (although god knows how long this place needs for teething!)

So you were there too.... how did you get on? Where were you parked? Right side of arena or front of arena? Did you see the big warmblood that was in the stables to the left of the arena? That was odle schmodle!

This happened to us once and now I keep long life cartons of orange juice in the box plus dried pasta/soup etc.
Not a lot of help if you have a trailer but a plastic box with some biscuits and said fruit juice might save your hunger and thirst another day!
I do agree with you, very poor show not to even offer a cup of tea or a few cans...

Yes i remember the thread and i supported you on this one as i have had NOTHING but maons about this place,I was there on Monday at the Hanoverian show, in an official capacity, i parked my car in the car park out side the main pedestrian access and was ordered, not asked to 'move that car to over there..' mmm 'I explained , nicely that i had quite a lot of kit and i was just going to unload and the reply....' No move it now!!!' This is a place where they advertise 'running shows ' as part of the syllabus!! Ha!
This is also the same place that has 9-5 students with most weekends off!!! Thats going to be good preparation for the real world !!! Yes i know i am going to get 100's of thats not true posts now , but well after 30yrs of experience in this industry i think i 'understand' the reality. I get them on my yard and then they really start to 'learn'.
So the being 'told' by a student that this is'nt the case Re: available refreshments is just par for the coarse at this venue.
It would be interesting to know how well the judges were looked after too as i know this has been a problem also in the past getting the judges. This is a case of 'all the gear and very little idea'. Perhaps it would be better to concentrate on the horse and the industry from a better base of understanding this is a 'service industry both in the service of the needs of the horse and the human client. Not just as a Dressage' center.
Sorry to hear you had a pants day in terms of enjoyment we work hard to get out and compete.

Well it just goes to prove in my original post all those months ago, that it will NEVER make a dressage academy.... I must admit the running and organisation seems better than before, but thats about it......

I remember pulling in, in the lorry and announcing "Oh they've finally got gates" but they're not much use if they are left open!

I also saw an advertisement for horses wanted for the academy! Who in their right mind would place a half decent horse there? I certainly wouldn't!

Will report back once I've heard back from British Dressage

Hi mat-b i had an 'intersting day!!! I rode 16 mares they came in to me in groups they were all pretty well behaved the production of these horses has improved in the three years i have done the test riding.
There was one mare i would gladly take home, she was AWSOME!!! Beautiful intelligent and a joy to ride. Thankfully she has a good rider and a good owner so i will be watching out for her!!! The most intersting of the day was a chestnut that did the test under its own rider totally hollow. She had amazing power but it went nowhere. I just got on and said GO. Put my leg around to support not chase let my hand give contact not take it and boy did she respond!!! It is always an interesting thing to do and i always enjoy it.I may sometimes have a few more grey hairs!!!!
