Is it compulsary to plait for BD? Tried doing my horse on Saturday - complete disaster. Wouldnt let me go anywhere his mane and plait i did do looked awful.

No, but IMO horses should be plaited unless a native breed. I think it improves the overall appearance.

Just keep practising and make sure your horses mane is short enough and thin enough and it will get easier.

I wish I could practise on him - he was rearing on saturday when I tried

you'll find some people plait, some dont its personal preference. Depends what mood I'm in as to whether I do or dont.

I always plait regardless of discipline. Just improves the overal appearence of the horse.

Look at like this, when you go out (clubbing etc) you make an effort to look good, makes you feel good. So why not do the same for your horse!

Not sure my boy would look too good with a 70's style collar shirt unbuttoned to the naval to reveal a large gold medallion

You will have to try and get him used to it slowly. I would actaully bunch his hair every day - really loosely and just get him used to the feeling of having the plaits in.

Now I would always plait for dressage - its just more correct. Saying that I had a New Forest Pony and didn't plait him cos he was a native as someone else mentioned before.

Yeah I know what you mean, I have a five year old who is a b***h to brush or comb her mane, let alone plait it be we do keep having a go. Last week got as far as putting it in bands (not plaited). She's not ready to do dressage yet but hopefully by the time she is I will be able to plait it - Fingers and Toes crossed

LMAO - that brought some weird images to mind. I have to half-hog my horse to get plaits in as he is part irish cob and his mane is HUGE. I used to have 28 plaits and they were golf-ball sized. Now I get 12 not bad ones.

Its good to make the effort I think.

i dont plait for BD or anything else coz he's a Welsh Cob - probably would plait any other breed, but not if it just caused masses of stress - it's just not worth getting both of you wound up about.
