BD Turnout/levels questions

Right, with all this lovely metalwork in my leg it looks like I am off serious jumping pretty much for the rest of this year, so once back on my feet and my horse, I am thinking I will use my otherwise now wasted BE membership to get the reduced price BD membership and do that over the winter instead!

So I have three questions - never even been to watch at BD before so will do that at some point, BUT.

1. Turnout. My horse is an arab with full mane, for eventing I usually do a running plait along his crest - would that be Ok for BD as well? And I usually turn out in a hacking jacket with coloured stock, is that ok too or do I need to change that? Not sure whether to try to disguise his breeding with plaiting/black jacket etc or just embrace it! Always going to get judges who like them and judges who hate - arabs being rather like marmite.

2. What level. Do many venues offer Prelim? Last winter we did a fair bit of unaffil dressage and he is consistant in scoring about 65% at Novice, last couple of prelims around the 70% mark, his test last weekend at Tweseldown before the disasterous SJ was a 31 and thats a trickier test than most prelims with the g&r in canter down long side and 1/2 10m circles etc. So would it be reasonable to go out at prelim at beginning of season and try and qualify for something, then move up to novice? I'm guessing competition is MUCH stronger at BD than unaffil but mainly out there to have fun and the odd rosette would be a bonus more than anything!

3 and final - venues. We are in High Wycombe, South Bucks, and I ave on my list BCA, Welllington, Addington, Snowball, Merrist Wood, Windmill Farm, BRC and Widmer - any favourites/others/bad reviews? Would hope to get out once a fortnight through from Sept - whenever the BE thingy ends (Feb?) and then decide whether to extend membership for rest of year - kind of depend if allowed to event!

Anyway, thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any help! Would love to hear any stories of other people doing BD with non-standard horses (arabs, cobs etc!)

Checkendon Equestrian Centre have dressage and BD quite regularly!

Sorry to ask but where you the person who took a fall in the showjumping at Tweseldown? Very sorry if it was you!

you dont have to plait for BD its not in the rules. I never do my horse as my plaiting is beyond hopeless (and hes a TB). You can "get away" with it more for an arab, as they are not shown plaited. However if hair is getting in the way plait him

I was one of the apparently two people who had ambulance in the SJ that day sophos! I was the one that got carted off for a 5 day stay at Frimley Park though

Good point I forgot about Checkendon! Do they do all year? Prelim?

Thanks wench, his mane does get in the way a bit, its dead easy to plait so not a problem either way, just need to try to make best impression possible but guess going to be a total lottery depending on the judge! SOme will prefer him if they think he might be PBA rather than pure - but hoping some may mark us up when he behaves as they might be expecting worse so pleasantly surprised! Fingers crossed anyway!

I BD my arab. I dont generally plait her up apart from a small running one at the poll just to tidy up around the bridle area. I think you should be fine with your running plait. Classes wise, most do prelim but you dont need to be a member to do these classes. If you are confident at novice I would just do those. In my opinion, it was at novice level that the judges saw past the 'its an arab' and I actually felt that they gave a fair reflection of the tests we were doing.

Thanks abb123, thats interesting. Did you do any qualifiers etc? I have found at Nov unaffil, that he scores better in a way because it keeps his 'too clever for his own good' mind a bit more occupied! So same might well apply BD! Maybe I'll try a few where I can do one prelim and one nov. Would like to have a crack at ele by the end of winter but might go unaffil for first few in case of disaster!

Would love to see any pics of your arab doing BD!

Thanks. Most frustrating thing is I feel fine - biggest danger is forgetting there is even a problem and getting up off sofa! Nearly done that a couple of times!

i've been to windmill, BRC, BCA, Wellington, MW, Addington etc - they're all good venues. TBH most BD venues are good. They have to be a certain standard to be allowed to hold BD. There's plenty of prelims around.

Fab star thanks - I see you have a welshie - do you plait him? And is your photo of you in hacking turnout from BD? I do prefer my hacking jacket/coloured stock but looking at websites think turning up in our 25 year old bedford with a hairy arab we are going to stick out like a sore thumb anyway so don't then want to be the only one not in white breeches (*

You won't go wrong with your hacking jacket and coloured stock. I can't really understand why there is any difference between your arab or someone else's welsh or anything else, if you want to event or dressage then pull the mane and plait and then they will be shown off to their best advantage anyway! They are all lovely horses but look a flipping mess with all that hair everywhere IMO. I always think that leaving manes long and feathers on for proper event / dressage classes looks a very happy hacker. Get out the solo comb and the scissors and you'll never look back!!

vik100 - thanks. I trim his heels and tail, I do leave his mane long but plait it up and think he looks pretty smart (would never enter my horse into anything looking 'a flipping mess'!). The main reason I keep his mane long is because he rubbed out the middle 1/3 of his mane as a baby and now has this section of mane that is INSANELY thick, and stands on end. And is truely hoorible to plait as goes in every direction under the sun. If long though the weight of it means it all falls uniformly to one side! And I'm much better at running plaits than normal ones

the photo on the left is from BD (the Winter Champs - notice flowing mane and tail and feathers - am proud of his royal Welshiness and refuse to plait the bugger as his mane is so thick). The photo on the right is my new baby Welshie at unaffiliated dressage - I only tend to wear tweed if I've been showing at the same show as cant be bothered to get changed, but I do see people in tweed at BD. I have done BD on new pony unplaited as well. At the moment I'm tending to plait him as his rugs rubbed away half his mane and it looks a right state but once it grows out I'll go au naturel again. I refuse to trim his feathers as I show him and I think plaited with full feathers looks a bit weird.

I do resent the implication that if we turn up unplaited we look like happy hackers. My old boy got 81 BD points, went to the regionals 3 times, the Area Festival Finals and came 4th with 70%. I dont think the judges thought we were happy hackers somehow whatever snobby fellow competitors might think. I used to hack him down the main road to Merrist Wood and turn up in my fluoro gear on my hairy cob - got some funny old looks from the posh people with their big lorries and some even funnier ones when he came away with the red rosettes.

This thread has answered many of my questions too

For the last 2 years of me owning my mare we have had clipped feathers, pulled mane, fully trimmed up all the time & 4 shoes now i decided shes a horse so i will let her be a horse so feathers grown, mane in the process of growing, nice thick tail and barefoot. I figured i would rather see a horse especially cobs in their natural state, the flowing mane and big feathers i think adds to the picture. TBH if judges want to mark me down becuase i don't conform to the 'smart, trimmed dressage look' i will let them.

I say just go for the BD, no harm in seeing where you get to with it and i hope you and your horse enjoy it. At the end of the day its not how they look its how they perform on the day and how much you enjoy it

Just PM'd you Gucci_B.
Thanks for replies Star, certainly won't be pulling my arab's mane so will prob go with the running plait as much to keep his mane out of the way as anything. Do trim his heels cos otherwise he gets little tufts off the back of his fetlocks that look REALLY silly!! But glad you have seen people in hacking jackets as I do prefer mine.
And isn't it the best feeling, being the underdog I guess and still taking the rosettes home!
