So my friend has bought a beautiful German horse who she imported. She bought him just to have fun on and he was a bargain as the yard were trying to clear space and he wasn't going to break records.

She is very very well schooled but we don't know what level she competed at (she knows all lateral movements, changes, pirouettes etc...). My friend only want to compete at a very basic level as she isn't fussed about big scores etc but just wants to see what he can. I said skip prelim but I don't know the BD scene too well, what is involved at novice? and upwards?

Also I don't think she was competed much (if they had space on the lorry she would go but normally other horses pipped above her). Would there be any restrictions on what she can compete in in the UK?

Also I know you can't ride double until elementary but I wanted to check? She was sold with a double but goes ok in a snaffle which we are trying to get her used to but she does feel much happier in a double at the moment and is a lot more forward (I think its a bit of a safety blanket for her!).

thank you in advance lemon drizzle on offer! :)

What age was she when she was imported, if she is older than 4 BD will automatically add grading points unless you take her for an assessment to have the points removed.

Also if the rider is group 8, you can downgrade the horse this way but would have to compete in the open section.

If she is good at the lateral movements then it would seem elementary would be a good place to start anyway. Even at this level only the very basic lateral movement of leg yield is required. (possibly 1 test may have a 1/2 walk pirouette).

Burtie is correct, she'll be given points depending on her age. If she's nine for example she'll be given advanced medium points (435), even if she's never done a test in her life!

To get round this:

1. Have her assessed. Then she'll be given the right points for her ability. You have to pay for this and go to a centre where one of the few registered assesors is... so can involve a bit of travelling depending on where you are.
2. Simply downgrade. Sounds like your friend will be grade 8 if she hasn't competed BD before, so horse would be given 50 points, allowing her to compete novice or above. BUT, you do have to go in the open section of every level up to the one you were downgraded from. So, if she's downgraded from AM because she's 9 (this is all for sake of argument of course!) then your friend can only go in open section right up to medium level. (This is correct from 1st dec 2012, right now, it will include open to AM).

Read rules 14,15 and 16 in some detail to understand fully!

I'm in this position with mine, he was imported at 9, given AM points, downgraded for old owner but NOT assessed, downgraded again for me some 7 years later, and I'm stuck in open section up to and including AM, even though he can't do changes and never has!

Can I just add that assessment is a very straightforward, easy procedure :) Also if you don't have transport you might be able to get the Assessor to come to you (although they will ask for expenses, of course).

okay all sounds doable (though blows my brains a bit, I normally just do backing and my friend has always been stictly happy hacking with the odd bit of showing) We will have to look into it...

thank you all though, I will eventually get my head around this crazy system! x
