Well that is interesting! I hope they manage to find a venue fitting for the occasion (not yet another spin around Aston le Walls!!). Blenheim makes sense to me... or perhaps a really beefy Blair?!

I suppose Blenheim first appears the obvious choice but I would love to see Blair step up to this - timing would work better too where it slots between Olympics & Euros.

Unless they can convince Gatcombe?

Not sure who else would really have the setting.

The more I think about it, the more a summer break up in Scotland is sounding appealing!

That is positive news. Really hope it's not A-le-W as NT already seems to have a bit of a stranglehold.

Gatcombe would be great - needs to be somewhere accessible for European riders to get to so not sure whether Scotland would meet that brief?

I don’t know - it’s not much different to Brits trekking to Pau, if they want the run in that time frame they will travel. Plus they have Lehmeulen and Pau on continental Europe. Plus a number of the Europeans are based in UK.

Wasn't one of the Scottish events a 4* back when that was the highest level? Blenheim maybe?

Hopetoun either had a 3* or 4*, I can't remember which! A few years ago and I think they only go up to novice now.
It's a good bit further south than Blair and not far off the motorway! The view across the Forth is worth visiting for.
But it would be lovely if it was at Blair. Its a super event, dead easy drive from down south and has good infrastructure on place.
Only downside is it does tend to rain the whole weekend!

Given the level of work I did wonder if it would have worked better to just say they would cover Burghleys costs given that no one is going to have a spare 5* laid out ready.

Interestingly one of the things mentioned by Burghley in the H&H+ article was impact of event on local area...

I read the H&H+ article, and am still not quite sure what the reference to the Burghley locals was driving at ?‍♀️.

“We did explore crowdfunding, and spoke to many riders, among other bodies, and received masses of support. It’s sadly not just about that and the estate has other considerations, such as the local area, how it affects people who live locally, the perception of running behind closed doors; it’s a bigger picture and we must acknowledge we are here by invitation of the landowners, Burghley House Preservation Trust, who are our hosts,” she said.

I wonder whether Stamford has its share of people not wanting thousands descending on its door.

There are always locals being vocal re Badminton traffic wise.

perception of running behind closed doors?!

The rest is a bit weird, shame 'classic ibiza' at burghley has sold out. .

ergo they probably do have locals that would prefer it didn't happen but burghley still has a pretty full calendar events wise, and if they ran it behind closed doors the extra people for eventing would be less than many of those.

I cannot see Bicton taking it on. They have been awarded the 4* as it is and it will be running at a loss for the organiser.

Badminton was cancelled quite late in the day as they were going to run behind closed doors so I'm assuming course was built (probably back in early 2020). Fingers crossed - it's 10 miles down the road!!

A bit random and probably totally impossible, but when I read that in the Horse and Hound my first thought was Thoresby Park. If anyone is up for the challenge it's Stuart Buntin and the BEDE team and Thoresby took on Osberton and seem to be quite keen to promote the site for eventing.....?

The park's working land though - holding an event August/Sept with little prep is different to using what's already built. Plus depending on the spectator rules, you'd never be able to stop people just wandering in. The Badminton estate is open.

Mainly sheep on the park and the Slaits (old pt to pt course) is used for shows in August. The footpaths are diverted during the event. See - I'm really hoping ;)
