It would appear the plait/stealing thing is in fact very real!Lady down the road from us had her welsh d youngster targeted

,fortunately she saw the plait and immediately contacted the police, who have been out and photographed it etc!horses are now in and she has shelled out more than 1500 in cctv equipment!
They have also been seen around our yard just up the road from this lady

really quite frightening! It would appear that the bad weather has hampered their efforts!
HOWEVER,i have walked the fenceline today(which backs onto a ditch and farmers field,so nobody would have any reason to be there at all),and even after all this snow it is clearly visible that somebody has jumped the ditch and walked the fencing of the field that the ponies that live out 24/7 are in,and conveniently it is the gap with no trees they have walked!
So if you have horses on the messingham/scotter side of scunthorpe please be very aware and check your horses manes and tails thoroughly!Especially if they live out!
Its about time somebody followed these barstards and shot em!

Just a thought but I found a plait in my mares mane (a definate plait) brushed it out etc the next day found it held in by a barbie hair tie...turns out the potential 'thief' was actually a pony-mad 8 year old.

Sometimes!

Because of course feeling the manes of every horse in a herd is the efficient way of identifying the one you want to steal.

More likely it is a horse friendly dog walker who has gone for a wonder around the edge of the field, but good to take extra precautions.

wasn't mandy was it? I just heard that she'd be targeted from a friend! another girl on our yard said her friends dad saw flashlights and went out to scare the people off. He found a plat in her horses mane too and the scariest bit was the horse was in her stable and it was next to the house!! we're all being extra vigilant at our yard in messingham, we're lucky cuz our yard owner always confronts anyone who come in that he doesn't know and any of us liveries would too! thanx for the warning tho

Sounds like our Mandy Mandy to me. She had been out with the horses until midnight, went back out in the morning at 8:15 a.m. and the plait was there!

When she was having the CCTV installed a green 4x4 with a lady in it was parked at the bottom of her drive for 10 minutes. As soon as Mand went to approach her she drove off.

Mand was then speaking to someone from the Haxey area that had been targeted, and they had issues with this green 4x4 with 4 men in it! The police investigating the Haxey matter had implied it was travellers!

A girl at our yard had her trailer pinched a few years ago, found out where it was on a travellers site, and the police REFUSED to go on site to retrieve it as it was too dangerous.... speaks volumes! Not the sort of people to approach/confront on your own!!

Sorry Rudey, that comment annoys me too - WHY are poice 'scared' to go into travelers camps? This has happened near us when someone spotted thier trailer in a travellers camp but police said it was too dangerous for them to go in! WTF??!!!

Surely travellers are people ;ike everyone else and don't police tackle drug dealers and armed gangs regularly??!

Ooh, makes me sooo angry, especially as we have had gennies nicked (presumably by travellers) on several occasions)!.

Anyway a bit off subject. Does anyone have any idea where horses end up that are nicked? I assume they are sold on and are stolen to order? just seems very odd in the current climate really that stealing horses makes anyone any money. Then again, I guess even if you casn get £500-£1000 for a horse you never bought in the first place then money's money isn't it.

apparently they are shipping them over to ireland!Dont like em microchipped as apparently they quite hot in ireland for chip checking?
Yes it was mandy,mandy
smile.gif
,she has sent me a pic of the mane, dosnt look like a plait as such, looks like a big taffle held in place by a tiny plait at the back!
All of our 24/7 turnout liveries now have their horses stabled in the barn with ours, cant imagine they will come back in this weather, and hopefully our area will be a bit of a hotspot for em now, which could very well put them off!

yup yup the police unfortunately don't have a leg to stand on if they go onto a travellers site- they can get charges with unauthorised entry etc etc even if they have a warrant, and if any of them are attacked guess who gets blamed!! makes me angry!!

hopefully cuz my boy is in so much we might be ok... he rolls in mud when out, looks slightly retarded most of the time and sleeps on his own poo so fingers crossed they'll ignore him!!
