Following on from an interesting comment on another thread, and since I am looking in the future, for want of a suitable horse that is, to maybe attempt such events,

What horses would you say were suitable for BE?? Is any horse suitable regradless of age/type?? Having never watched a lower level BE (all have been ** events and upwards) I cannot comment on the statement that some horses are run unfit for it, cant see it as i wouldnt but it does take allsorts doesnt it.

Should any type of horse be ruled out? What do the eventers on here think of the types of horses that are good to go? And which type of horses struggle in getting above the littler classes?

It depends on how far you want to go in eventing; The best "type" of eventer is usually a horse with blood in it crossed with a more native type horse, eg. an Irish sport horse, which traditionally is a tbxID, but does also mean anything bred in ireland as well :p

You can't go far wrong with a tb x native imo :)

Cobs with short legs can struggle to make the time, plenty have the jump but not all have the speed to go within the time safely :)

Most horses can make it round a PN (BE 100) course, the heavier the horse, then they can often find it harder to get (and keep) fitness. Most event types tend to be those with a strong amount of TB blood but I am beginning to see more warmblood (or crosses) at the lower levels.

I have bought an ISH to go back to eventing, and he seems to be more TB than ID. A friend has a TB, an ISH and a nice mare out of Stanhopes Diddicoi waiting in the wings for next year and another friend is currently going intro on her connie pony.

I have got a Belgian warmblood who I event, he is by Concorde (who is by Cor De La Bruyere) out of a Belgian mare called Matsouka D. Although he's a WB I would say he's actually more a TB type, he looks as if he's 7/8ths bred rather than pure warmblood. Although he's got the jump and dressage ability to go advanced (he's won 1.35's) he is in no way brave enough to go above Novice/Int Novice. I would say ideally if you wanted to event above Novice and be competitive you would want something Thoroughbred-y with a bit more blood so you've got the gallop but also the bravery as well.

I think if you are starting out BE you should ignore what breed the horse is and buy one that is a good allrounder with a good, willing attitude.
Any horse can get to PN but to be competitive and have fun you will need one that's consistent in all 3 phases and a horse with a good, willing attitude will keep you safe and give you fun.

For the higher levels you need the above plus blood, scope and paces. Most good event horses are TB's, TBx's or the lighter framed WB's which usually have a decent amount of TB in anyway. You need speed to make the time and TB/TBx are generally brave and can jump bigger fences at speed safely.

I have a WelshxTB and a WBxTB and I would say haveing XC/SJ both of them I would take the WBxTB eventing before the WxTB, not just because of his age but because she is more bold jumping than he is :)

He however has stamina coming out of his ears, does 25 miles plus common ridings and can also shift when required and keep up a steady ground eating pace so I wouldnt rule him out for those points, He does look more welshy than TB anyroads ;) My mare however is bold (most of the time) and has a great jump, might be her breeding or just her tho :)
