Is it possible to search for horses on the BE results section if you are not certain of the spelling. For example could you put the first part of the name in and then a * or something as a wildcard?

It will only accept one name anyway, unless the whole name is correct. Be it the first or last name or even rider, if they have history you should come up with a list incorporating the name you typed in.

it will search from the first 3 letters.
