BE rider unseated at fence?

They can remount if the horse has not fallen, although may be stopped if officials are concerned, not allowed at International level which may be what you are thinking of.

They can take off the air jacket and continue as long as they have a body protector underneath :)

That does cause a problem, I think if wearing one you can take it off and continue without but in reality not many people will get back on as there is little point, most will retire air jacket or not.

In my experience fence-judging, at the lower levels riders often continue after a fall. If you've paid all that money to enter and neither horse nor rider are injured it seems perfectly reasonable and better for the confidence level of the rider.

I fell off at Badminton Grassroots and got back on and continued. Left my air jacket with the fence judges. I wasn't going to retire at fence 8 or whatever it was!

I think when FEI changed the rule to say that riders would not be allowed to continue after a fall there was talk of BE following with the same rule, not sure if it was ever implemented (and then withdrawn) or never got beyond the discussion stage.

Back in ye olde days a few riders got back on at Badminton to carry on after a fall, I think most memorable for me was Lucinda Green on that grey...

Yup, same experience here! The last one I had to help with was the most adorable pony and child combo - simple tip off when the pony stumbled on landing and neither were injured. She left the air jacket with me, got back on and had a lovely round. Mum came rushing round shortly afterwards to retrieve it!

I still find it odd that riders who start a course with an air jacket are then happy to continue without one... does falling off once make you immune to falling off twice?

I question this logic, too! It might be that having fallen off, they're no longer competitive so likely to be going slower, taking fewer chances, more likely to retire if not going well rather than pushing on?

Why question it?
Having taken the airjacket off these riders are then afforded the same level of protection as riders without airjackets who are also competing

I think carrying on at lower levels should be allowed, and have no problem with people carrying on sans jacket. It's the logic of the rider themselves that I don't understand - the dichotomy of wearing an air jacket for additional protection (and why shouldn't they), but being happy to take it off and keep going if they've had a fall.

Because they think it's good to have additional protection, but they don't deem it a necessity.

And most people's safety decisions are compromised at some point by carrying on doing things they want to do! I've replaced hats after dropping them, hitting my head on a thick branch out hacking and after falling off - but I still rode after dropping the hat until I could replace it, I didn't immediately head for home out hacking and I got back on the horse after falling. I'd imagine most people would do the same, in practice!
