I have the most fab beagle ever but I have a serious problem with her barking at the horses. (luckily they don't mind but its driving me mad!)

I have stockfenced an area for her infront of the stables. The layout of the land meant it needed to be this bit because it was already enclosed.

The problem is if I am turning in/out or even go to stroke one she goes mad. If I don't tie her up she will chase them the other side of the fence when I lead them in and out and barks really savagely at them.

When they are grazing the other side of the fence she isn't bothered. If they run around she barks. I have even turned the horses out in the area stockfenced off for her and she settled down with them quite happily but the next day she is back to barking at them.

Any ideas? Sorry if its a ramble.

Does she chase them or is it just barking?

If they run at horses it can be helpful to have a confident horse and rider who will turn to face the dog - the dog tends to realise how much bigger the horse is and back off sharpish (at least in my experience anyway). But not sure how helpful that would be if she is just barking? Might be a totally rubbish suggestion!

You could also try filling a jif lemon with water and hiding it in your hand to squirt her when she barks?

She actually chases them along the fence when I bring them in/turn them out. I have actually ridden my horse in the area she is fenced off in and the silly dog started circling us and going mad barking. Luckily my mares a pro and ignored her but I could tell she was getting annoyed with her.

I thought beagles were supposed to get on with horses!

After walking my old lurcher on lead past a paddock for weeks I let him off thinking he would be OK but he shot under the rail and chased the horse round the paddock snapping at it's heels and barking. When I eventaully caught him I hauled him out by his collar in a sort of garrot effect and threw him down on the ground, still holding his collar, and really laid in to him verbally, getting right up in his face and keeping him pinned down. I must admit this was more rage on my part than anything but my god it worked! He never went near the horse again and I've since seen it done in a similar (but more controlled

) way on The Dog Whisperer

I have a Beagle too,she is on and off with the horses. Somedays she's in the field with me and is too busy eating poo etc! to be interested in them and other times she will just holla at my horse over and over again, luckily my horse is extremley dog proof,i usually try to distract her and it generally works. As they are so foody i would have some treats and at any time she is quiet when you handle the horses/have to pat/ groom/ride give her treat, when she is being naughty ignore her,if her behaviour is very bad and in any way dangerous if you do have to remove her from the sitiuation do not say anything at all. They think that even shouting/telling them off is good attention. It's hard to explain on a forum but Beagles respond well to food rewards, they don't like being left out so she will soon learn!
