In idiot terms - what would be involved and could a complete novice attend? I have a pointer and a vizsla and although they are just pets - they have very strong hunting instincts - particularly the pointer who is always flushing out pheasants on walks. They have basic training but no specific gundog training but I always thought the pointer (a rescue) should of been in a working home as her instincts are so strong and I think both dogs would enjoy doing something they were bred for.
Now seems as good a time as any to get involved as I won't be competing on Jenny for a few more months yet.
Well OH will be in charge of the beating line.
So long as your dogs aren't gun shy, and you have good call back then that will be fine.
All the beaters follow a line through the cover with their dogs flushing out pheasants towards the guns, I went out with my GSD x Dobi as he loves flushing pheasants, only thing he is useless at is retrieving and standing by the guns as he howls constantly, which you don't have to do if you are beating!!
Hope that all makes sense!!
If your dogs are happy to run through undergrowth and will go back to looking for the next pheasant after they have flushed one... ie. not chase the one they have flushed! Then that is perfect. OH would be happy to take a novice so long as they have good basic control of the dogs!! So far he's had 3 enquiries all from people without dogs!!
