i'm looking to get a weanling colt from this years sales in september but cant decide whether to get 1 or 2.
i know that its normally best for youngsters to grow up with other youngsters so was thinking i would get 2 and then put one out to loan/sell when backed. but on the other hand i'm also thinking that as it would be totally unhandled to begin with i would stand a far better chance if i just had one! what do people think please? my other horses are a veteran mare and a very playful gelding so a lone youngster would still have company and a sort of herd heirachy.
thanks!

dont say that!!!!

i think the average is around 150 - 200 pounds but the amount of knowledge, work and time needed doesnt really make them cheap in the long term! i just love the characters you get :-)

I went through a phase of buying colts at Beaulieu, mine were to make between 13.2 and 14.2 and I bought them for £50 max (the last was a few years ago). I always got mine one by one and used them as companions to my riding horse, when each one hit three Id sell it and get another. They were always totally unhandled and after 3-4 days were usually very forward and bold.

I turned up in a large and very smart racehorse transporter with an acqaintance who was buying himself a colt too. We were told in no uncertain terms that 'our sort' weren't welcome at the sales, and the chap who owned the transporter received several late night calls for a few weeks after that, and a few fake 'bookings' for his transporter.

We spoke to a verderer who recommended contacting them in future as they often have loads of very cheap youngsters that they want to get rid of, and you dont have to go through the hassle that some of the 'regulars' seem to give anyone whose face doesnt fit

I bought 2 foalies 5 years ago. Originally was only going to get 1, but had plenty of grazing so bought a couple and I'm glad I did.

They started off stabled together, kept in the field together and it was really useful to compare them.

One of my ponies is a real bully so it was good not to put them in with him while they were small as they would've been haranged.

They loved to play and would've annoyed my 2 to death so it was great that they had each other.

I sold them when they were 3yrs old. They made just under 13.2hh. I would've loved to have kept them as they were a huge amount of fun, and real sweeties, but I rode the bigger of the 2 a couple of times, and felt huge on her, so they were both sold to lovely homes. I still miss them lots.

Forester babies are so sweet and they are as a breed nice friendly ponies and have a reputation for being easy.

I can assure 'ethel....' that if she went back to the sales now she would not be greeted in such a way. In fact I have bought there over the last 6 years and have NEVER seen what she has described. I have always found everyone so welcoming and the commoners can't do enough to help you.

Prices have risen 270% over the past 3 years for pure bred NF ponies and they are in high demand. Whether you buy 1 or 2 would depend on the amount of time you have to spend with them. Some foals that go through the sales are already halter broken but they do fetch a higher price.

Good luck, I have bought some terrific ponies from that sale.

the subject of my "OH DEAR" thread yesterday was bought at Beaulieu Road sales.....
