This is my first event report too -hope I don't bore you all to tears!!

Yesterday Missie and I went to our second intro, at Beckwithshaw near Harrogate. A new event, and very smart too we thought, although it was a 15 minute walk (in the pouring rain!) to the XC start from the lorry park... Somehow yet again I managed not to leave myself enough time for course walking and working in so having power walked round the XC and feeling a little puffed I arrived at the dressage warm up to find they were running 10 mins early - why does this only happen when you're late??! As usual I was too much of a wimp to make the dressage judge wait for ages so went in early, surprisingly our test was fairly reasonable, definite improvement on last week to score 35.8, about 14th in our section.

Showjumping I was a little disappointed with as she had been so fantastic in our lesson on Wednesday I had high hopes of a clear round. Things went ok until fence 7 and then managed to have 2 down

Think I need to get bossier as she does get a bit enthusiastic towards the end and stops listening..

So on to XC, which interestingly caused a lot of problems (I counted only about 10 clears in my section) despite being relatively straightforward I thought. Missie was great; the first few fences were a little hairy as she is SO bold and there were an awful lot of fences coming up very quickly one after the other. We went through the water so fast I doubt she even saw it! So I got a bit cross with her after that and the second half was a lot better; I was really pleased as not even a hint of a hang or nap so vast improvement on last week, and she even coped with a loose horse running right across us on the approach to fence 18 without even batting an eyelid, not bad for a green 5 year old...!

So to cut a long story short we finished up with a few time penalties to finish 8th in our section. Embarrassingly I was beaten my old school riding teacher (who must be about 50-odd!) into second place! But I was happy with our 8th rosette

Sorry no piccies this week, only mum to help and she's not too hot with video/camera, and the professional ones were a bit rubbish. Hopefully will have some nice ones from Richmond next week instead

Well done!! Thats great!

Agreed that the course was strait forward, not overly inviting though I thought? We watched a few go and not even get over the first few fences and there was nothing wrong with those! I had a run out at the fence before the water.

Well done again!

She's called Gill Saunders, she used to run (and presumably still does!) the riding school at my old school, which was Queen Margarets at Escrick. She did very well actually I was impressed!!!

oh did you, bad luck

It did seem to cause a lot of problems that fence, I guess they were all looking at the water behind? I agree possibly not the most inviting course, I watched a few and it didn't seem to encourage the most fluent rounds, certainly mine felt a bit hairy over the first few fences which came up incredibly quickly!
We watched one horse in the PN stop at fence 3, have some very sticky jumps over the next couple and then get stuck halfway over fence 7 (after the steps up), didn't look very nice

Yea we saw that one too!!

I thought the PN might have been a better standard but it didn't seem to be..

Think my horse was a bit put off by the down hill-ness of all the first half - he went much better after the water! I loved the last fence!

All in all a very good event I thought!

No i think you have to get to novice really before the standard starts to improve noticeably...
Maybe that was it actually as mine improved a lot after the water too! Yes the last fence was great, that was the only thing on the course that backed Missie off even fractionally, just as well really otherwise we would've been on a ridiculous stride

I thought it was very nice too, very smart and well organised. The only annoying thing was hanging around for hours for the prizegiving, but that was due to someone objecting to their XC score so can't really blame them for that I suppose...

The time seemed a bit ridiculous - the PN had 45 seconds more than the Intro, but it was more or less the same track!

Surely every single horse isn't meant to get time penalties? Made it less of a dressage competition though which has to be a good thing!

Glad you mentioned the time, I thought that was really bizarre as well. Surely the time at intro should be reasonably gettable, but it was Sunday lunchtime before any horse in any intro section got the time, and even that was only 1 second inside! Interesting what you said about the PN novice time- just reinforces what i thought yesterday, that they messed up a bit setting the time. I thought we went pretty quickly but still got 10.8 time penalties. In a course that twisty and with fences so close together I don't see how we could've gone much faster TBH. And anyway if intro is meant to be for young or novice horses and riders then the time should be appropriate to that, you shouldn't have to go flat out in order to get it.
Weird!
confused.gif

Yes exactly! I think they cocked it up to be honest.
smirk.gif
I got 11.6, I did have a run out though but was pretty quick the rest of the course, strange! Did you get any time penalties in the last one you did?

Yes I got 11.something... But I could understand that more as a) she was a lot spookier and spent half the course leaping from side to side
tongue.gif
, b) I trotted into one fence to make sure I got the angle to the step right and took several turns very steadily as she is so green, and c) she had a little nap towards the end of the course which wasted several seconds

.
So I was definitely expecting to improve significantly on my time! Mum says that maybe because she is so strong I think I'm going faster than I am, which is maybe true, but even so she is a powerful TB mare with a hell of a back end and some serious acceleration, so you would think that she should be able to make the time at intro without too much trouble!!

woooooooo i thought u meant her and YES she still does run it and wooooooooo i go to queen margarets!!!haha.

TBH the times at intro and PN are very gettable, its just that usually the standard intro rider has little idea of a true cross country speed.

I agree they usually are very getable, but the OT did seem a bit odd in the Intro yesterday, to have got within the time you would have had to more or less gallop flat out from start to finish!

ETS - there were some I saw that were just too slow - but some people were getting TP's in the 30's and 40's!

Ahh I see, its just that I ride at a fair old pace (generally inside the time upto and including Novice) and a few friends have asked me to pace them and they are genuinely amazed at how different the speed is. Sometimes if like you said the 1st part is all down hill then you tire quicker making the times slightly harder. At least it sounds like everybody was in the same boat.

It was definitely odd, and I don't think they ever take into account the style of the course either, as you couldn't really kick on that much yesterday as the fences were just too close together. Fair enough if you have a horse which is experienced then its easier but if like me you have a real baby that takes a bit more setting up for fences you couldn't really get going!

Oh hi!! Thanks!
Yep still on, will be there about 6. As I said on Friday I'm bringing a friend, Michelle, with me, hope that's ok..
