After seeing another post on here regarding becoming a judge, I was just wondering how you can do it. Is there certain age/experience limits, qualifications, who do you apply to and so on???? How do you even get to judge novelty classes at shows etc???? Also can you show your own horse and judge as well (though not at the same time!!!!!

random question I know but any help appreciated!

Depends upon the Breed Society, or Class you want to judge.

I am a breed judge and I had to gain experience Stewarding and shadowing the judges. Then I had to do exams! Took me nearly 10 years to get there. I imagine that there is a lot of polotics in all forms of judging, so it helps if you are 'in with thein croud'... or at least havent offended them.

I often get invited to judge at local shows, fancy dress classes, tack and turnout etc, etc.... loads of little ponies, about as far as you can get from the breed I judge. No pony judges seem to want to judge at local shows... so I get phoned.... I will put on a tweed suit and judge anything if lunch is included!

A good start would be to show willing, put yourself forward to be the steward assisting these judges you will learn lots! Once you have made yourself indispensible, you will learn how they got to where they are today!

I do youngstock and broodmares and foals. There was an initial interview and then assessment where we each had to judge a horse. Those who got selected then has a training course and more assessments before two years of junior judging at shows where you are with a senior judge. They report back to the association on your performance. If everything is in order you are then put on the list for selection by the individual shows.
