H is currently stabled on straw which i like as I can make his bed nice and big :)

I used to buy a couple of bales a week off the old YO but she has now left and the new people prefer using wood pellets for their horses so they will no longer be ordering in the straw.

I dont fancy using the wood pellets so need to decide whether to change to shavings or stick with straw.

Am not sure how easy it will be ordering smallish amounts of straw regularly however like it because its cheap but then wondering if I would use less shavings so whether it would work out similar? He is relatively clean and will usually just make mess down one side.

How much shavings do people usually use a week?

Im not using rubber matting as have tried that before, it lasted 2 days before I sold it as the drainage in said stable isnt good and all the pee just pooled under the rubber matting

If I were you I would get the rubber matting back if you are going for shavings. Nothing wrong with the wee pooling at all, it goes thick and gunky, dries out a bit and when you lift your mats after six months it will take 15 minutes, some jeyes fluid and some elbow grease to give it a clean.

I wouldn't use shavings without rubber. I give my girl a thinnish layer (about 4 inches - quarter of stable) and remove wet and poo daily, she doesn't need a big bed as she lays on the matting.

I use a bale every 9 days or so...
