Any suggestions…? I have a cob x who box walks and prone to both mites and thrush. When I bought him we changed his bedding from straw to shavings to help both these problems but he got through seven (seven!!) extra bales in January. I’m going to speak to the livery yard about what else might be good but wondered if anyone could suggest an absorbent comfy bedding that is more economical than shavings? Wood pellets? Recycled paper?? Any advice gratefully received!

Deep wood pellets with a shavings top layer is a good bed. Set up your stable for minimal walking about. If he's nosey put the haynet beside the door and the water within easy reach. Keep him occupied with something to play with on the wall, a swede tied up or a salt lick.

I use wood pellets in the pee spot under a deep shavings bed. Turn out as much as possible if you can.
If you can get hold of some Selsun 2.5% shampoo (not Selsun Blue) and thoroughly scrub his legs from hock/knees to soles of feet on day 1, day 5 and day 10 you should get rid of the scabs and dandruff that the mites feed on. Stamping and scratching usually settles down in 48 hours but complete the shampoos to catch any hatchlings.

Yes I did wonder about a toy… net and water are already by the door… I think he does most of the damage at feeding time when he doesn’t patiently wait his turn! Ideally he’d be out, but then the weathers been so shocking the yard have restricted the turn out. He doesn’t routinely need extra bales, so in someway the cost of Jan & Feb can be spread across the year… thank you for your advice, the yard might be happy to give pellets a go at least!

Ah thank you! Yes he’s got very feathery legs and gets an injection (sorry, can’t remember the name of the top of my head) from the vet every three months - but we did try Selsun with good effect but only once… I will try again at the frequency you suggest!
