My yard is moving away from straw as the farmer can't spread it on his fields without it costing him a fortune to replace the nitrogen that the straw takes out of the fields (I think that's what he said, apologies if I've got that wrong!).

I had just moved my horse to straw from shavings and he is SO much cleaner on straw as it doesn't shift about like shavings. I'm pretty gutted about leaving straw, and don't know what to change to for the best.

Bedmax was expensive - 2 bales a week. We're being offered the range of Sundown products and I like the Sundown Yellow (by the look of it) but I have not used it before. He wees in the middle, usually in 2 different places, and poos along the back. He's not a box walker but does kick a shavings bed about a fair amount.

Any suggestions or is it just trial and error?

Before I went onto wood pellets (over 3 years ago) I was a big fan of Sundown Yellow and would have continued using it except the factory burnt down and supplies stopped so tried the pellets. Now, I wouldn't change back at all; pellets are the easiest bed to care for especially for a walker and far better than other bedding materials for them I think. A pallet of them takes up very little room; think normal pallet size with plastic wrapping so can be stored outside; they take up very little room on the muck heap and break down very easily so your farmer will like them too.

Have used sundown red in the past which is chopped straw/shavings mixed with eucalyptus so smells fresh- loads in a bale, makes a lovely bed. Used Bedmax shavings too- lovely shavings, dust free. Maybe you could mix chopped straw and shavings together which works well too. Gutted that i'm allergic to all beddings :( (except paper and card), so i have to use paper which i love using. Gd luck with whatever you choose!

Big fan of the large-flake Bedmax, though it IS expensive. We use it in our access barns (our horses live out 24/7) and it doesn't 'follow' them out onto the yard like straw and smaller flaked bedding does.

Thanks all. I did like Bedmax but it was just so expensive.

I'll give one of the Sundown products a try, perhaps with wood pellets in the wet bit, so they can soak up more.
