I know it hard to think about spring with the current big freeze but I am trying to be positive :).

When your horses return to living out 24/7 in the spring what do you do with the bedding from your stable?

Most people on my yard keep the clean bedding and use it as a base for the next winter. I clear the lot and start again. Am I being wasteful? I just worry that its getting too dusty sitting idle for 8 months.

I keep the clean and bank it up, so that I have bedding in case of emergency over the summer mnths (horse normally out 24/7).

Then before he has to start come in at night again in winter, I throw out all the old bedding and give the stable a thorough clean prior to putting a new bed down.

I've got EVA mats, in the winter I have quite a thick wood pellet bed on half the stable, during spring I run it down gradually to just the mats as horse is only in for a few hours during the day. Then a complete clean out/disinfect and a new 1/2 stable bed for next winter.

My boy tends to have to come in for some time during the summer due to being lami prone but I do tend to run the bed down as low as I dare and give it a healthy bulk op-up to freshen it up... he's on shavings / rape straw and given the price, I refuse to chuck decent bedding on the muck heap unneccsarily (I even moved a load with me when I moved yards... NB his bed stays clean and fresh looking all year (doesn't go brown)...

I take the remainder out & what is clean goes in the field shelters.
Then I wash out boxes & if they need to stand in during the summer they have the rubber mats, tho obs if in for a long time I will put a fresh bed down.
However during summer they are usually out 24/7, even if moved to a small paddock with shelter during heat of the day.

I empty all the boxes at the start of the summer and pressure wash them all, then do any painting or repairs that are needed. Fresh beds are put down just before they come in again in the winter, or if anything needs to come in over the summer for any reason.
