My mare is due to foal in about 6 weeks so we are suposed to be putting her on straw as you do, however we bedded her stable down only the other day and she didnt stop eating it, she's got a history of colic so we rang the vet and she said take her off it straight away. She's back on shavings now but we need to find a bedding that she's not going to eat and will be safe for the foal, we are going to ask our vet too but anyone know of any bedding thats a possibility?

I think that Jet_Set did quite a bit of research into this when her mare was foaling last year - might be worth PMing her? My ISH mare is also a great eater of straw, so we switched from shavings to a hemp-based bedding for her foaling bed, which worked fine, although expensive - so they didn't stay on it for very long!

I have the exact same problems with my mare and we are using Ned Bedz, it's chopped straw and treated to make it not only taste bitter but also has anti-bacterial properties. It's also reasonable and just as absorbant as shavings.

I've been really impressed by it so far

Ditto, Nedz Bedz Pro it is, and thats what Jetset used and recommended to me. I like it too!

The other one to think about is Bliss Bedding, chopped rape straw treated with Bitter X, my friend foaled one of hers down on that last year and it was fine. I am going to foal my mare on ordinary straw, but would use Bliss if I was in the OPs position.

I'm using Nedz Bedz Pro too! Changed my mare from shavings to straw and when I arrived at the stables the following morning the greedy mare had eaten most of it! Remember reading that JetSet used Nedz Bedz and changed to that! I now prefer it to shavings!

I have foaled in the past on Bedmax - very large flake shavings and this was very successful! I foaled my mare this year on Sundown Yellow, as both of us are allergic to straw!

thanks guys for all your suggestions

spoke to our vet aswell and she recommended keeping her on shavings so like you said about using Bedmax as its big flakes. so i think we will have to do that as i can guarantee she will eat anything!!

How about Aquamax? It's also used for other breeding animals and they shouldn't eat it!!! If you need a supplier try horsezz.co.uk and the website is quite clear and helpful. Ta

Janet George foals hers on paper I think it is and is very happy with it. We use straw so cant recommend anything myself

Yep - paper is very good - particularly on rubber mats. Problem is finding a decent supplier at present - mine is Wolverhampton based - and there's one in Norfolk. The Evesham one closed down recently - haven't found anyone else.

We have a local breeder who uses Aquamax, as we do, for foals. Also the latest one fell and scraped its joints all down one side...but this bedding is naturally antiseptic so it helped it recover...google horsezz for details
