I have a very messy horse and have tried a few types of bedding over the last couple of years. I have tried shavings, straw, unibed and currently using aubiose.
I like the aubiose but it is so expensive and going through loads. He has rubber matting underneath bed.
Am cosidering going back to straw as it so much cheaper and would be included in with livery.
What are everybodies thoughts on bedding?

My mare is very messy too

I am on straw now as it is included in the livery and as good as any! Wood pellets worked for us before, but had to be quite a deep bed

Hi I have used shredded egg boxes for my 3 ponies for some time now and one is particularly messy. Its a heck of a lot cheaper that nedz beds and shavings. Its £4.65 a bale. I get mine from Harbour Bedding www.harbourbedding.co.uk. the wet soaks up like blotting paper and its really warm. I have rubber mats and although I have used all types this is the cheapest and in my opinion the best I have used.

Wood pellets/flakes, as I exhausted every other option! It is the best thing I've found so far

Straw was impossible as even with a big, thick bed that was mucked out twice a day, horse was still getting thrushy feet and it was still disgusting

.

Shavings were more successful, but I was getting through two to three bags a week, which was costing an arm and a leg!

Wood pellets, is the cheapest option at about £5 a bag, I'm only having to use one bag a week on average and it takes me just five or ten minutes to muck out most mornings!

There was another thread on here recently about CushionBed, love it for my messy horse

As long as I really firm it down, it stays in place & doesn't shift. Absorbant, quick to do & cheap - £5.50 a bag, used 1-2 bags a wk.

Used to be on straw but find this quicker & easier

I tried everything and now use Ecomax Horse Bedding. Wood pellets definately the best for my wet messy mare and Ecomax the best of the wood pellets and believe me, I've tried everything and you won't believe the difference in all the pellets. Only costing £6.00 per week as I only use one bag a week. Shavings was costing £28 a week and Liverpool Wood Pellets the cheapest of the other pellets but no where near as absorbent, so ended up costing more at £10 per week. Very happy as Ecomax bed nice pale yellow and I know that there are no nasties in there as it's made from Virgin wood pulp with no chemicals and no recycled wood. I thought recycled = good, but not where bedding is concerned. It can include old pallets (plus whatever chemicals has spilled onto them) and hardwoods which can damage horses respiratory tracts.
BEWARE wood pellets that are intended as bio-fuel (including Liverpool) as these can have stuff in that's dangerous to horses.
