I'm looking for suggestions for good bedding, i'm currently using snowflake shavings but i really do not like it. I can't use straw as i am allergic and my horse can sometimes get a cough, although it does depend on the straw.

Any suggestions would be brilliant, Thank you :)

I've recently changed from straw to wood pellets. I love them find them easy to muck and and you don't waste any bed! I have just bought a pallet from Verdo. Have a look into them.

I would recommend considering hemp, easibed (little wood slivers) and wood pellets. All are low or no dust, very absorbant and economical (ignore the bale price on hemp as it is amazingly absorbant and goes a long way).

I use hemp mixed with wood pellets in a 1:4 ratio which works great. I find Aubiose more absorbant than Hemcore and looks cleaner too.

Edited to add dont be tempted by chopped cardboard - OH came back with a couple of bales he got, never ever again. Blew everywhere, soggy and smelly, blinking nightmare!

I use bedmax which I really like but I'm considering wood pellets as I have mats and I think it would work out cheaper.

Quick question for pellet users how often do you do a total bed replacement?

I dont, altho over time the contents do get replaced by gradual subtraction and addition.

The mats/floor stay really dry with pellets as its much finer stuff than shavings/straw and so if you dig out the really wet parts when you muck out (just the bits that come up to the surface) and remove the poos, you just have to add the odd bag to top up (slit open and add some water then leave for 15 mins then add, or even add dry if to a dampish patch).

Hi,

Contrary to a previous post I have used chopped cardboard bedding for 10 years successfully as my horse suffers COPD. I love it it is so clean and absorbent. I think it would be a pain and very soggy if you just scatter on matts. I have a full bed and do semi-deep litter. Remove muck every day and wet every 2nd to 3rd day. I start bed with 8 bales (13x14 stable) and top up with 1 bale a week. So much cheaper than shavings and rots really quickly on muck heap. It's a different way of mucking out, I use marigolds for poo picking the shavings fork to take out wet and lift bed.

I wouldn't go back to straw or shavings.
