Had a text today saying that 2 shetlands have been stolen from bedford area and also 6 coloured horses had been taken from Northampton..

I rang both bedfordshire and northamptonshire police and they have stated the following...

There has been no reports as of 4pm today that any horses have been stolen in the bedfordshire area.. there has been some tack stolen but no horses as of yet.

There has been some horses stolen in the Northamptonshire area, but were unable to give me any information due the data protection act on these cases. Also reported which they could tell me was there were quite a few places where tack and trailors have been taken within the last 2 / 3 weeks from this area.

In both poilce deptments they are fully aware of the situation with the "photographers" and have had a number of reportings.

If anyone has any info on the following horses stolen pls let us know what happend on this post.

Hope this information helps

Like i said don't panic.. I couldn't get any more information from the police so I don't know the locations i'm afraid. I can't understand why they couldn't tell me anymore but they wouldn't! grrrrr lol I'm hoping someone who comes on here might be able to help with the missing information. It maybe worth you having a go with the police if your concerned. Did try twice and spoke to two different police officers but couldn't get any were. sorry x

Just checked my email & only 1 ringmaster messages about a stolen horse which was the one taken near Luton (19, bay cob mare). Always getting messages about breaki ins/attempted thefts of tack & equipment. Having been to a horsewatch meeting a few weeks ago I have been visibly marking every bit of equipment I can. Think about it - if you were nosing about to reccie a place & all the buckets were marked would you bother to break into the tack room or would you assume that anything of value was marked as well and go somewhere else?

hi i'm from the northamptonshire, kettering/desborough area to be precise. heard about these horses being stolen last week. am slightly worried, as behind our land in gypsy owned field, black & white (piebald) cobs are appearing in abundance. there has always been a few, never any more than 6 or so, in there, but over the last few days, more and more are appearing. theres something like 20-odd in there now. may be nothing, but thinking about informing the police with my worries, just in case...

Email me with any extra info please? theres also some ponies.

i heard today that horses have been photographed in the kettering area, and horses stolen around there too.
particularly trying to target in-foal mares, apparently... 2 for the effort of nicking 1, i guess.
be very vigilant...
justjazz, got to be worth mentioning it to the police i suppose, but very carefully... if they are legit, you don't want to upset your neighbours.

I had an email last week about an attempted theft in melton mowbray, but Melton police said it wasnt true.

I am on the leics / northants border (Market Harborough / kettering) and have heard of nothing else in the area.

PLEASE guys, the best thing you can do to set your minds at rest is to take your valuable tack HOME and have your horses freezemarked. What would you rather spend the money on? A new rug or keeping your horse safe?

No excuses!

Do you have crime numbers for these. I repeat that I have had no ringmaster messages anout stolen shetlands in Bedfordshire. The only message I have had about a stolen horse was from near Dunsable & Peter Natt has posted the details including crime numbers.

Maybe if you read it properly you would see that OP stated that the police had said there were NO stolen ponies in bedfordshire... so why are you asking her for a reference for a crime that even she said WASN'T committed???

Would advise the Police and Horsewatch "just in case".

I agree with the poster who said there is no excuse for not having your horse freezemarked. At least you have a more than fighting chance of getting them back if they did get taken.

I have just had this e-mailed through to me from Northamptonshire police.

Here's some more information that you should be aware of.
There has also been another similar incident in Burton Latimer.

Regards
Paul

On Sunday night a horse paddock in Weekley was targeted, with two gates being opened by lifting the hinges despite being chained and padlocked.

Luckily, the horses were not caught but I would be grateful if you could spread the word of warning that our area is being targeted.

It is not know if this incident is related to the spate of horse thefts, but it would be wise to treat it as such.

This is a genuine message from northamptonshire police.

thankyou everyone, am going to inform police but not leaving my details, i'd hate to find out in a few weeks time that these horses had been stolen, and i had done nothing about it. better to be safe than sorry.

how do you contact horsewatch?

also these people (gypsy type) who use the field behind me are taking horses away using a variety of vans, 4x4's and trailers...

usually white transit, or grey 4x4, with either a white, black or red ifor williams trailer...

keep in touch, thankyou for info etc...

Also a good idea is to have copies of photos of your horse(s); Front, left & right, and one of the back end. Also note any clear and unusual markings, as should your horse be taken, god forbid, the police will find your horse easier to trace, and also you'll have the proof that the horse is indeed yours...

Passports help too!

keep any info coming

Hi my horse is at moulton college, and on the welland valley feed website there have been postings of attempted horse thefts, in kettering, deene and in the woodford area a piebald mare has been stolen. The attempts in kettering were to steal two hunter types. He is a hunter type! What is going on?

I've heard on the grapevine that there is going to be a newer horsewatch set up in Northamptonshire in the next few weeks....

[/ QUOTE ]

Will be more than happy to be involved if there is.

Apparently the Northamptonshire HOrsewatch died about 4 yrs ago now.... however plans are now in place to revive this and a new County Coordinator has been found.... I believe that the CC is looking for suitable coordinators in certain areas to set up Horsewatch groups, so that the cascade communication system can be set in place! Anyone interested?

Thought you were Leicestershire?

It involves setting up a horse watch group for your area, and keeping all your groupies informed of what is going on, what to look out for, committee meetings etc etc.... liasing with the County Coordinator etc....
