Hi there

I am considering re homing a whippetxbedlington (3 years old) current owner says he has itchy skin. vet has ruled out mange, fleas etc and has put it down to excema which current owner treats with a spray. Does anyone have experience with Bedlingtons...are they prone to skin conditions? Are there other ways to ease/treat? I am guessing that changing the dog over to raw feeding should make a slight difference and I have seen it work wonders on my other dogs.

I appreciate any feedback...plenty whippet experience....no Bedlinton!!!

Hi, I have bedlington and have an lot to do with a fair few of them :) As a rule Bedlingtons that are bred correctly are extremely healthy,. Copper toxicosis was a problem in the breed but the Breed society are working hard to eliminate it and are being sucessful in general. However there are still some breeders ( usually not the registered ones) who carry on breeding regardless of CT. CT however does not give any issues with skin complaints. Allopicia in Bedlingtons is again not a widely found problem so I doubt its that issue. Bedlingtons can be very sensitive to food, and complete foods are very poor quality in most makes. Raw feeding works wonders for many but it can be that they have developed the allergy due to their food history and it may not be possible to get rid of it. However, i know several people who on raw only diets have completely eliminated it. My bedlington has no skin issues and has been fed raw from the start. A bedlington whippet is a lovely mix, one of the most desirable lurchers :) Change her food and you may well have a dog with no issues at all :)
