I am currently looking at a Bedlington that has come up for rehoming - Hes 5 years old, not castrated, he sounds like he needs some serious TLC, the owner on the phone said she could not afford to clip him, they need clipping every 6 weeks. He doesnt sound like hes fully house trained aswell. Hes good with other dogs and also good with children - not that I have any.

Im going over to look at him on Friday - Anything I should look out for?

Also, I live in a cottage in the middle of nowhere surrounded by acres and acres of land so plenty of walks for him :)

Well you obviously want to see a friendly little chap and I would watch how he interacts with his owners, if you do adopt I would go back to basics with him. I would make sure his vaccinations are all up to date and I would worm and deflea him. I would also get him neutered as this will help stop the marking in the house but will take a while to have an affect.

PM Cayla and ask for her rescue and puppy guide, its brilliant and will give you something to aim for, I would also crate train him as well and keep him confined to one room when not supervised. If he was mine I would get him clipped out and bathed as well.

I would also ask the owner what they are feeding him and if its rubbish I would slowly change to a decent food.

Good luck and hope the intro goes well.

me me me me me............ I am the AAD bedlington person :) Flodden is my little beddy. :) They do not need clipping every 6 weeks, unless you want to keep him in show trim. I can trim Floddy once every 2/3 months to keep on top of his coat, BUT you do need to brush every couple of days with a fine brush as they do tangle. You do need to trim his feet underneath, in between his pads. I do this once a month. You need to pull the hair out of his ears otherwise they are prone to ear problems. I have forceps and do this every couple of weeks, it doesnt hurt, but if the dog has been neglected then he may object.

I would have him castrated immediately, Bedlingtons are know as wolves in lambs clothing. They look soft, and cuddly and are generally very very calm, but once riled they are in it to the death. Flodden takes an awful long time to get annoyed, but when he does the object of his anger is in no doubt he means it and always back off. However some bedlington dogs are reknowned for being dog aggressive and looking for trouble. Specifically the working bred lines. If he is working bred and has worked then you may have an issue with recall as they are notoriously hard to get them to listen and respond. Like all terriers they can be incredibly strong willed, but once you have them onside they are incredibly loyal. If he is entire at 5 the chances are he has been used on a bitch, bad owners put them on whippet and greyhounds as a money/ puppy making exercise as bedlington lurchers are among the most favoured, so be prepared for a dog who knows what bitches are for, and one who scents. But that can of course be trained out, speak to Cayla as she is the training expert.

I adore my beddy, but i have had him from 8 weeks, he has been the easiest dog I have ever had, I can groom him, trim him, do anything with him, he has just been approved as a PATS dog. I know his breeding, I know there is no Copper Toxicosis in his line which is a problem in bedlintons, so you need to be aware of that.

There are some really good Facebook groups for Bedlingtons and I have found the Beddy community are very very friendly and really happy to help. Very few groomers know how to groom a bedlington, so you may struggle to get him trimmed as a beddy. but to be honest a short trim works fine as a normal day to day image :)

If you have any questions at all please PM me I am more than happy help

Thankyou for that Bosworth and Dobiegirl :) I'm not too bothered about him not having a bedlington trim along as his free from matts :) I'll then make sure his coat is groomed every day and make sure he'll never have any matts! And also hope that we can get him to look like a bedlington.

Also will be going to find a decent vets that will do a good job of the snip :) and going to buy a crate as he will be at home alone for approximately 2 hours a day and I don't want him trashing the place until he knows this is home :)

He's not a working dog just a bedlington that's fallen into the wrong hands I think, will find out more on Friday. And I'll ask if he's ever been used for stud hopefully not.

I've seen allot of whippet and lurches bred with bedlingtons but they use them allot for lamping don't they!

Please will you tell me what Facebook groups ere is :) thanks

They do matt easily, because they dont moult so a quick go through every day with a rake is easy. I take 4 hours to trim my boy into his standard Bedlington clip if I want to show him. And it took me hours to get half decent at it. whereabouts in the country are you, I may be able to put you in touch with friends who can help you learn to trim yourself, saves me a fortune, even tho I had to buy my kit.

try this site https://www.facebook.com/groups/21416169261/ Loads of friendly people on there (including me) who will be more than happy to help in any way they can :)

He may not be a working dog, but he is likley to be from working lines, see if you can get his papers, then you would be able to check if Copper toxicosis is in that line. Forewarned is forearmed with CT.

Speak to Cayla about crate training, if he is 5 years old and has not been in one he may struggle. Flodden has never been destructive, and neither has his litter brother/ sister. but I do know a couple who are amazingly destructive.

Bedlingtons lurchers are great dogs, and are a 'trendy' lurcher, as well as being phenomenally sucessful at lamping.

Really appreciate the advice! :)

I live just outside Burnley in Lancashire if that's any help?

Would be great of I learnt to clip myself like you said would see loads of £'s!

Hopefully will be able to find out his breeding but if not is there a test they can do for the copper toxocsis? What happens if he does?

Thanks again :)

Oh I tried to join that group yesterday. The dog that I'm going to view is the 5 year old and I rang up about the one in the Wirral but she's already got someone interested. X
